This obituary was taken from the St. Clair Times, Thursday September 7, 2006. Essie Mae Vaughn Pell City--Funeral service for Essie Mae Vaughn, 92, was Thursday, Sept. 7, at 1 p.m. at Mt. Moriah Baptist Church with Brother Ted St. John and Brother Zane Smith officiating. Burial was in St. Clair Memorial Gardens. Mrs. Vaughn died Saturday, Sept. 2, 2006. She was preceded in death by her husband J.B. Vaughn. Essie was born in 1913, the first-born and only girl of George and Ader Tollison. She was married in 1932 to J.B. Vaughn. Her family was one of the founding families of Mt. Moriah Baptist Church in Pell City. She was a member of Mt. Moriah Baptist Church for 79 years. At her passing she was the oldest living member of the Church. She was a mother of three children of her own and also helped to raise two children of her brother, Leon Tollison, who was killed in WWII, Jerry Tollison and Shirley Stanley. With the passing of her husband in 1983, she became actively involved in the Pell City Senior Citizens Center and remained a beloved member for 21 years. She was very blessed to have a loving family, special friends and a host of loved ones. She touched the lives of all who knew her. She has a strong Christian influence that will live on for many generations. She is survived by her son, Billy Wayne Vaughn (Linda); daughters, Juanita Savage (Howard) and Bobbie Jean Bishop; 7 grandchildren, Steve Bishop, Carol Middlebrooks, Gary Savage, Joan Golden, Jeff Vaughn, Jason Vaughn and Joey Vaughn; 8 great-grandchildren, Caleb Middlebrooks, Amanda Middlebrooks, Gracie Vaughn, Any Kearley, Jim Golden, Blair Savage, Tyler Savage and Jodi Bishop; two great-great-grandchildren Jack Golden & Dani Kearley; several nieces & nephews. Pallbearers were Steve Bishop, Gary Savage, Jeff Vaughn, Joey Vaughn, Jason Vaughn and Caleb Middlebrooks. Lola Christine Brown Pell City--Lola Christine Brown, 91, went to the loving arms of Jesus Christ her Lord and Savior Aug. 27, 2006. Born April 11, 1915, Lola was the first of five children born to Ophelia & Ausborn Bowman and the granddaughter of Zechariah & Mary Sweat Bowman, an activist of Sacred Harp Singing. Known affectionately as Granny Brown, Lola's existence centered on God and her family. Embracing life with zealous energy Lola shared operations of L.A. Brown Grocery/Gas with her husband. Lola managed the store during school hrs, Auldon relieved her after his shift at Avondale Mills so Lola was home with their daughters after school. Being a dedicated homemaker, she was active in PTA and various college events in her daughters lives. Lola's talents included gardening, flowers and being a skilled seamstress creating sequined prom-growns, dresses or stylish suits for her daughters. Lola was preceded in death by her loving husband of 52 yrs, Lonnie Auldon Brown; and her two precious baby sons, Auldon Freeman Brown and Lonnie Richard Brown; parents, Alice Ophelia and Ausborn Freeman Bowman; sister, I.V. Layton; and brothers, L.E Herbert and Cecil Bowman. Left to cherish her memories are daugthers and sons-in-law, Barbara and Bill Vaughn of Gladsont, Ore and Dinah and Wayne Sparks of Pell City. Grandchildren, David Sparks of Pell City, and Alicia and Darrin Hughes; and great grandchildren, Carlie and Rhian Hughes of Gladstone Ore.; sister-in-laws Pearl and Hazel Brown; a host of nieces, nephews, friends and her brothers and sisters in Christ at Stemley Baptist Church.
