    3. Baden was a German state run by Duke or Grand Duke (depending on the period). For most purposes this was a nation. But in theory it was subordinate to the German Empire (Holy Roman Empire of the German Nation). At some point they threw off the Emperor and were briefly a nation until swallowed up by Prussia and then Germany. It's complicated and I'm oversimplifying to the point someone will undoubtedly correct me for being technically incorrect. But there you are. Baden, a little German country. Baden is also a city, but to avoid confusion they started calling it Baden-Baden long ago. And I'll leave it at that.
