    3. Thanks for the info....confusing yet understandable. Sounds like my family! steph -----Original Message----- From: alsace-lorraine-bounces@rootsweb.com [mailto:alsace-lorraine-bounces@rootsweb.com] On Behalf Of Brian J Densmore Sent: Tuesday, March 05, 2013 8:44 PM To: alsace-lorraine@rootsweb.com Subject: Re: [A-L] SCHAWANG genealogy Baden was a German state run by Duke or Grand Duke (depending on the period). For most purposes this was a nation. But in theory it was subordinate to the German Empire (Holy Roman Empire of the German Nation). At some point they threw off the Emperor and were briefly a nation until swallowed up by Prussia and then Germany. It's complicated and I'm oversimplifying to the point someone will undoubtedly correct me for being technically incorrect. But there you are. Baden, a little German country. Baden is also a city, but to avoid confusion they started calling it Baden-Baden long ago. And I'll leave it at that. I know the feeling. I grew up vaguely remembering German speaking great grandparents. I was, also, always told by my grandmother and my aunt that the family was German, but then, lo and behold, I discover from my own actual research that while they spoke German, they were actually from Wietersviller, Wingen-sur-Moder, Ernolsheim-lès-Saverne and the surrounding areas.
