    1. Re: [A-L] French forename or surname?
    2. My great grandfather, born in Alsace, was named Theophile Schwertzler. I have the birth record and have seen a number of variations of Theophile in American records. Could this be the basis of Toughfield? 3. I think you've got it! Godfather to Francis Toughfield Louzon was Theophilus Gougon (I suspect Theophile Gougeon, but the church record reads Gougon and "us" is a Latin ending). Theophilus Gougeon was born in Quebec, Canada. Both Louzon and Gougeon list French as language spoken on US Federal Census. It doesn't explain the findings of TOUGHFIELD in my searching for the name. All of them lead to French Canada. Your explanation is the only one that makes sense. 2. Hi Curt, It's been a while cuz, but I have been reading your e-mails with interest, especially your posts about Riegerts. You're the best! In reference to the name variations, do you recall in the Sacred Heart records from Mount Holly, NJ John's gg(?)Grandfather's name was listed as Fredrick Riegert on one of his childrens baptisms instead of Theophile? We must get together when I'm in NJ to compare notes again!
