My gut reaction, based on what you found, is that the "society" is an association whose members who "rescue" or sponsor incoming immigrants from Alsace, being from there themselves. Antone did "take in" Frederick Spreng and sponsored him for US citizenship. I'll go to the Pa Historical Society to ses if I can locate this association's history. have you tried Google Books, and type it in as a search term? They have tons of old, out of print books, there might be something there.
