Lynda, As a librarian at a local LDS Family History Center, I have never seen any option to "purchase" microfilms from the FHL in Salt Lake City. Perhaps you are confusing "purchasing" with "indefinite rental." Microfilm rentals may be rented 2 more times (total of 3 consecutive rentals at US$5.50 + some FHCs also charge a handling charge) and, if the FHC has storage (local option), the microfilms can be placed on "indefinite rental" and permanently stored at the FHC (meaning may be used by any patron but they may not leave the FHC).
