Thank you. Didn't realize they had that much information on towns in other countries. -----Original Message----- From: alsace-lorraine-bounces@rootsweb.com [mailto:alsace-lorraine-bounces@rootsweb.com] On Behalf Of Linda H. They are the ones who have filmed all sorts of records from all over the world. Depending on where you are located, there may be one close by to you or in a neighboring county. You can find a complete listing of FHC locations on their website at http://www.familysearch.org/eng/default.asp. Look for the link in the middle of the lower half of the page that says "Find a Family History Center". Films need to be ordered at one of the FHC's and it has to be done in person. Go to the library catalog to determine which film or films you might need. Who and where would you order these films. ----- Original Message ---- From: Valorie Zimmerman <valorie.zimmerman@gmail.com> To: alsace-lorraine@rootsweb.com Sent: Thursday, August 7, 2008 4:35:05 AM Subject: Re: [A-L] surname :Adolph Since you have a village name, why not order the films for that village, and see what you can find? Artolsheim is in Selestat, Bas-Rhin, Alsace, France, as a quick google search found. See http://www.maplandia.com/france/alsace/bas-rhin/selestat/artolsheim/ for a map. My great-aunt, who is 96, and still living, said that her father's family said they had people on horseback ride by and throw fire torch's at their door and scream there's going to be a killing her tonight. My great-aunt said that they wanted to leave so my great grandfather didn't have to fight the Prussians as a teenager--so the story goes. We don't know from what city they left. We don't know on what ship they came to American as passengers. I've checked Castle Garden and can't find any Adolph's. I've tried Adolphus. Adolphe, etc. My great, grandfather signed his Naturalization paper in 1880, in Ohio, as Valentine Adolph who surrendered his allegiance from William Emperor of Germany. A Phillip Beck also signed on his Naturalization paper. The Beck family and the Adolph family inter-married (somewhat) I understand Alsace-Lorraine (or the area) went back and forth over the years controlled by Germany, then France, then Germany, etc. > > My Great-Aunt, is still living at 96.
