    3. Hi I am still searching for information on the Adolph family. Valentine my gggrandfather was born abt. 1826 in France. He was a laborer. His wife was my gggrandmother, Elizabeth Schnell (or Snell), born in 1824 in Alsace. My ggrandfather, also Valentine, or called "Fritz" was born in 1862 in France a brother to Elizabeth, "Lizzie" born in 1859; Sarah, born in 1865; and Susan, "Katie" born in 1867. Our understand is that the family was not Catholic and those living near them were. My great-aunt, who is 96, and still living, said that her father's family said they had people on horseback ride by and throw fire torch's at their door and scream there's going to be a killing her tonight. (we assumed that meant since they weren't Catholice they should get out). Somehow the family left France and came to America in 1874. My great-aunt said that they wanted to leave so my great grandfather didn't have to fight the Prussians as a teenager--so the story goes. We don't know from what city they left. We don't know on what ship they came to American as passengers. I've checked Castle Garden and can't find any Adolph's. I've tried Adolphus. Adolphe, etc. My great, grandfather signed his Naturalization paper in 1880, in Ohio, as Valentine Adolph who surrendered his allegiance from William Emperor of Germany. A Phillip Beck also signed on his Naturalization paper. The Beck family and the Adolph family inter-married (somewhat) I understand Alsace-Lorraine (or the area) went back and forth over the years controlled by Germany, then France, then Germany, etc. My Great-Aunt, is still living at 96. She said that her father, didn't have (3) names. She also said he'd told the her that he lived at the foot of the Vosges mountains as a boy. We do have the name Artolsheim but can't seem to find any facts to substantiate this. After coming to American in 1874, the Adolph Family settled in Madison Township, Muskingum County, Ohio. The only name we have is Artolsheim. We don't have another names for where they may have lived or what Artolsheim signifies. --their village, birth, ? This is like looking for a needle in a haystack. If anyone has any ideas, please send them. I'd really like to find out something more about them. Sincerely, Karen S. Adolph

    3. Since you have a village name, why not order the films for that village, and see what you can find? Artolsheim is in Selestat, Bas-Rhin, Alsace, France, as a quick google search found. See http://www.maplandia.com/france/alsace/bas-rhin/selestat/artolsheim/ for a map.
