Köln/Cologne was never part of A-L. Napoleon did occupy it and there is a historical result of that occupation. It seems that when Napoleon occupied Köln there were no house numbers. So he commanded that a rider go through the town and number each building consecutively with chalk. One particular fragrance shop was numbered 4711. Their product was given that number as its name, and is still sold today http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/4711_%28brand%29 At 03:23 PM 8/10/2008, you wrote: >From: "Ralph Taylor" <rt-sails@comcast.net> >Subject: Re: [A-L] ALSACE-LORRAINE -- >To: <alsace-lorraine@rootsweb.com> > >RE: "Alsace Lorraine in North West Germany near Cologne" >"Would any one on this list know if when France controlled the area >Northwest of Cologne in period 1792 to 1806 or maybe later was that area >known as Alsace Lorraine then?" > >To my knowledge, the area northwest of Cologne (German = Koln) has never >been part of either Alsace (German = Elzass) or Lorraine (German = >Lothringen).
