I have tried many resources and have been unable to find much on my grandfather or grandmother. I have always heard that they were both from Alsace but have found no proof except on Census I have found my grandmothers parents Frederick and Elizabeth Bisch (I think nee Renner) were both from Germany in the 1910 USA census and had come over in 1983. However in the 1920 USA census Elizabeth was listed as from Alsace and both of her parents were from Alsace. They were living in Piitsburgh PA on both of these censuses and my grandmother was Emma Bisch. My grandfather was John Kaechele. He stated on the 1910 census that he was Swiss-German as were his parents. I have been told his parents were named Casper and Anna (nee Readausch) Kaechele. John died in 1915 in Pittsburgh. Hi Madelyn, It was customary for our ancestors to provide their location of birth according to the political situation at the time they were asked this question. In 1910, Alsace was part of Germany. It was returned to France after WWI in 1918. Our job would be made easier if the name of a town was provided along with the name of the country, but unfortunately this was not the case. :-) If you check these resources: GeneaNet http://www.geneanet.org/ and GeoPatronyme http://www.geopatronyme.com/ and input your surnames of interest you should be able to get an idea of what locations your surnames were most prevalent. This may help you to narrow your search to a specific region of Alsace. I also recommend that you look through the list of resources on Valorie's pages on the link at the end of this email. Your surname of BISCH I find interesting. I have at this time two people in my lines with the surname of BITSCH. The BITSCH surname was prevalent in the town of Gildwiller which is located in the department of Haut-Rhin, Alsace. This I know from records I have worked with from the town of Gildwiller. BTW, it is always best to provide a subject lines with your posts. Many people tend to ignore anything without a subject line. I hope that this is of some help to you. Thanks for the comments. I guess I confused things about the dates. My information is that the Kaecheles left Germany in 1873 and the Bisches left in 1885. I have found a US passport application for a Frederick Bisch that indicates this gentleman was born in Westhofen and arrived is US May 5, 1885 aboard the SS Harmonia from Harve. I am wondering if this might be my great grandfather. This was in 1901 and he lived in Pittsburgh as did the applicant. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Linda H. It was much easier to say you were from Germany in 1910 -before the crusade against the Kaiser- than it was in 1920, two years after the armistice. Take a look at some of the political cartoons during the war years.
