When you speak of ostracism, be aware that the church's position, the priest's views and the opinions of the parishioners may all have been quite different. Be careful about generalizations. My experience with the attitudes in small towns in the Pfalz and Alsace and Lorraine is that views range from very permissive to intensely narrow-minded and prejudiced.
