    1. [A-L] Kovis/Kowis
    2. June McDonald
    3. Hi Listers, I am seeking information about Jean Georg Kovis, estimated birth date 1767, birthplace unknown. Some years ago through a professional researcher a birth cert. for one of his children, born in 1807, was found. The child was registered in the town of Wingen; a fellow researcher found a subsequent death cert. for this child at age 18 months. The family were living at Lichthoff, George a shepherd on a share farm. The mother of the child was Marie Ann Heilig, and I believe her to be Georg's second wife as the 3 older children could not belong to her. The hired researcher could find no further trace of this couple. In the summer of 1809 they immigrated to Russia, departing from Frankfurt. It has indeed been a challenge to find information about this family. The occurance of the Kovis/Kowis/Kowitz name is rare in Alsace. One other person Anne Marie Kowis was married in 1786 to George Fritsch of Windstein according to LDS records. Considering the proximity of the towns and similarity of ages, Jean Georg and Anne Marie might be siblings. Where do I start? A Civil Registration for the marriage of Jean Georg Kowis and Ann Marie Heilig which likely took place between 1805 and 1807 could yield much valuable information but how would I access it? I've considered they might have been itinerant workers and be from the German side of the border. If there is anyone who can give me research guidance, I would be very appreciative. Regards, June McDonald Queensland, Australia

    2. Carolyn J Thomas
    3. Hi Bas-Rhin listers, Regarding where one might find records PRIOR to the earliest records found for a village on the ADELOCH databases: be sure to also check the information <i> in purple circle at top of page when you access the GRAPHIC version. For Lupstein, this <i> gives: Paroisse catholique: a pour annexes Dettwiller et Wilwisheim (jusqu'en 1687). Littenheim (jusque vers 1710). Papellienmuhl, épisodiquement Ingenheim et Gottesheim. Voir également les registres du chapitre rural de Betbur (Saverne) sous Lupstein (2E 275) non numérisés. IF you access the ADAPTÉE version (list format), once you reach the Lupstein list of records, you will find the same information right before your eyes at top of page: Liste des registres disponibles pour Lupstein: Paroisse catholique : a pour annexes Dettwiller et Wilwisheim (jusqu'en 1687), Littenheim (jusque vers 1710), Papellenmuhl, épisodiquement Ingenheim et Gottesheim. Voir également les registres du chapitre rural de Betbur (Saverne) sous Lupstein (2 E 275) non numérisés. Perhaps our Haut-Rhin listers may know how to find similar information on those databases. Tracy, this may not have the years you are trying to find, but, knowing what other churches your people may have attended (for instance when the Lupstein church was pastor-less) you may find other records not found in the Lupstein books. 3. Hello Carolyn, to make a very long story short, notarial records basically contain marriage contracts, inventories after death and all kind of records, e.g. acquisition/transfer of a property, house or field renting, etc. The first two are very useful for genealogists, as they give a good idea of the goods of people. An inventory after death (there is probably a specific term in English) lists the goods of a deceased person and his/her heirs. In Alsace, notarial records are to consulted at the Archives Départementales (Strasbourg and Colmar). They are often very difficult to handle and to read (I'll send you privately the first page of such an inventory). For specific places, they have been exploited by modern genealogists into a book. The CDHF (http://www.cdhf.net ) sells several books of that kind. Best wishes, Etienne Le 24 févr. 13 à 17:31, Carolyn Beno a écrit : > Hi Etienne- > Could you elaborate on notarial records? 3. Tracy, Lupstein has no parish registers before 1681 (Source: J.P.Kintz, 1977, Paroisses et communes de France, Bas-Rhin) Page 40: 4 July 1694, baptism of Bernard, son of Bernard SOLLER and Angela Page 45: 44 January 1696, baptism of Antonius/Antoine, son of Bernard SOLLER and Angela Unfortunately, the mariage register, that would contain the marriage of Bernard S and Angela, is unavailable (lost?). Not even the death records of this couple can been found, since only 1684 and 1685 are available for burials (S = sépulture, in French), according to the website. Therefore, the parish registers will not be of great help to trace this family back. Additionnal info could be found in notarial records, provided they exist for Lupstein. However, they are not on line. I would advise you to contact the "Société d'Histoire et d'Archéologie de Saverne et Environs" (SHASE): http://www.shase.org/ Best wishes, Etienne Le 21 févr. 13 à 21:21, Dryden, Tracy a écrit : > Greetings, > I am looking for birth and baptism records for my Soller ancestors > in Lupstein before 1681. 3. Laura and listers, there are books giving such information, but not online as far as I know. A source is Wikipedia (http://fr.wikipedia.org). Usually the confession and name of the church(es) is mentionned for each village / town Also, the CDHF website can be useful, for villages in the Haut-Rhin Department: http://www.cdhf.net/ then type village in "Village" (above right), then click on "--> En bref... >--". The church is then usually mentionned at the top.
