    1. Re: [A-L] PFORTZ was it ever part of Bavaria or Alsace-Lorraine?
    2. Linda Gutierrez
    3. Hello Ewald, OK, I understand that Mont-Tonnerre was never part of Alsace-Lorraine, but was a part of France as a separate department. I also understand that it was only in existence between 1798 and 1814. But what I still am not clear on is where was PFORTZ during this time period of 1798-1814? The map Giliane sent the link to does not show PFORTZ and the link I included in my previous email from Wikipedia indicated that WÖRTH-am-RHEIN was in fact part of Bas-Rhin during that period. So was PFORTZ in Mont-Tonnerre or was it in Bas-Rhin between 1798-1814? It may sound like a basically unimportant issue, but my reason for trying to clarify this is so that I can once and for all explain clearly to my other family members where our STEPHANY ancestors were from. Many of them believe that it was Alsace-Lorraine. This of course is not true, but if PFORTZ was part of Bas-Rhin for that brief period of years it explains the confusion. If it was not, then I can only reason that they assumed Mont-Tonnerre was really part of Alsace-Lorraine when in fact it was not. Looking at the map I can understand why such a conclusion could have been reached. Sorry to be such a bother. I just want to make sure to get this completely correct! Thank you once again for your help and patience! 3. Hello Linda, The departement called Mont-Tonnerre was another department of France between 1798 and 1814 and was really never part of Alsace-Lorraine. Giliane is right, the territory south to the river Queich (between Queich and Lauter) was part of Bas-Rhin between 1790 and 1815. According to the book " Das Reichsland Elsass-Lothringen,1901-1903 ": - cantons of the district Weissenburg/Wissembourg in the department Niederrhein/Bas-Rhin 1790-1795 (following names all in German language): Dahn, Ingweiler, Kandel, Landau, Lauterburg, Lützelstein (in district Saarunion after 1794), Niederbronn, Sulz, Weissenburg. - arrondissement of Weissenburg/Wissembourg in the department Niederrhein/Bas-Rhin after 1800: the above cantons (without the canton of Ingweiler) AND the cantons Bergzabern, Billigheim (1800-1801), Selz (after 1801), Wörth (after 1801) - in 1815, France (and the arrondissement of Wissembourg) lost the cantons Bergzabern, Dahn, Kandel and Landau. Hope this helps you to clarify the situation. Ewald +++++++++++++++++++++++ ----- Original Message ----- From: "Linda H. 3. I am researching on behalf of wife Edna Kollen born in New Caledonia. Her forebears appear to have lived in Alsace-Lorraine. The information we have(mostly unsubstantiated) is as follows" Great,Great,Great,Great Grandfather: Francois Kollen, Wife: Elisbeth Schlemer. Great,Great,Great Grandfather:Jean Kollen, Wife:Marie Claire Philippe. Great, Great Grandfather:Jean Kollen born 1846, Wife:Maria Claude born 1851. They have appeared to have opted to remain French and appear to have moved to BEAUVAIS (60)on 27 May 1872. Great, Great Grandfather: Léon Hubert Michel Kollen born Beauvais France 19 August 1879. He migrated to New Caledonia when he was 30 years old. He married twice. His first wife was Marthe Justine Michael Villaz and she had 7 children with him. Marcel Kollen born 14 September 1912 was her first born child in New Caledonia and was my wife's father. Marcel was killed in World war 2 in North Africa fighting Rommel at Bir Hakeim 1 June 1942. We understand that my wife's Great,Great Grandfather Jean Kollen born 1846 lived and may have been born in THOINVILLE(German:DIEDENHOVEN). We have a letter written in French which appears to be an extract from the official town records of the birth of Léon Hubert Michel KOLLEN from BEAUVAIS, FRANCE mentioning his father's name being JEAN 33 years old. However we have never been able to make the connection from BEAUVAIS to THIONVILLE of Jean KOLLEN born 1846 as shown on the birth details. We have Jean's birthdate of 1846 and his father's name JEAN KOLLEN and his grandfather FRANCOIS KOLLEN but no dates of birth of the last two. Could the 1836 census give us the proof of this connection? JOS de Zwart (AUSTRALIA)
