It is my understanding that Swiss Guards were and are (only the ones at the Vatican still exist) only Swiss citizens. While Swiss Guards served in other countries (courts, etc.) I think that all had to be Swiss nationals. Meaning a message was in my inbox and I clicked on "bounce this message". That means it is sent back to the sender as "no such address" or "not deliverable". But the message does not go to trash, unless one reads it, trashes it and then bounces it. The one I bounced was accidentally highlighted. Another had come in that definitely was "junk" or something - a legitimate name with the name as subject, but obviously, without reading an appeal for money from another country. As soon as I saw my error I bounced that one! I think Valorie, as moderator, knows when a lister's mail has been bounced. Hello to all, ESTEVEZ is likely another surname derived from Etienne. Estevan/Esteban is the Spanish form of Etienne. Question: what does "spanish latin" mean? Etienne PS I remember very well Martin Sheen in Coppola's Apocalypse Now. > Date: Sun, 20 Jan 2008 22:16:02 GMT > From: "shirleyh_1@juno.com" <shirleyh_1@juno.com> > > I think you are referring to actor Martin Sheen's original surname, which is > ESTEVEZ, not Estevan > > His four children are: > Charlie Sheen, Emilio Estevez, Renée Estevez and Ramon Estevez. > > -- Adodge74@aol.com wrote: > In a message dated 1/20/2008 3:59:16 A.M. The Papal States had an army. During 1848 and the final take over by the new Kingdom of Italy in 1870, they had accepted Catholic volunteers from all over Europe and the fledgling U.S. One group were a regiment of Papal Zouves. Ed Surkosky

Gloria, Thanks for the links. In my previous searching, all I'd ever found was specifically "Swiss Guard". While this line has a few stray Catholics who married in, they were pretty much Lutheran, so I doubt that he converted, though that would make sense. Since this service seemed to fulfill the typical required military service (that my great-grandfather had to serve), I thought perhaps the French government didn't care if they were Catholic or not. The Palatine and Noble Guards both sound like definite possibilities for this great-granduncle. I'll have to do more research on this to see what else I can find out. Thanks for your help. Maybe he converted. You may be right about not being a Swiss Guard per se. See http://forums.catholic.com/showthread.php?t=110403 or if you can't bring this up do advanced google and put in "Swiss Guards" and as exact words "not Swiss" and you should catch it. It comes up as "Papal Guards". I do find the questions and information on A-L so interesting regarding history as well as one's own genealogy! I'm curious about this, too, because my great-grandfather's younger brother (b. 1841) was (according to family lore given to us by the branch still residing in Alsace) "sent to Rome to be an honor guard of the Pope. He had to walk to Rome himself over the Alps. He had duty there for 8 years before becoming ill. He was chosen because he was big, good looking and strong and 'had good teeth'. " No matter that the family was Lutheran . . . I'm presuming he also had to walk back to Dehlingen, where he died in 1871. I'm guessing that he was there roughly starting in 1862. Everything else I've seen has said the Swiss Guard had to be Swiss citizens, but it's an odd story to "make up," and it would seem there should be some nugget of truth to it, if a similar story (well, without the getting ill) was heard in another family. True, my version doesn't specifically mention the "Swiss Guard", but was there any other honor guard at the Vatican? Did the various countries have to send a certain number of men out of respect? We (like many others in Alsace, I presume) have ancestors who trace back to Switzerland at some point, so was that sufficient? We've always wondered about the story, so I find it interesting that someone else has a similar one. Greetings, I have just received the obituary of my gg grandfather, Francis J. BUSCH, reportedly born in Alsace on 10 Feb 1821. The obituary states that he served in the French Army for seven years. He was married in Lowell, MA in 1853 and I can document that he remained in the U.S. until his death on 3 Oct 1898. I have checked Ancestry, done a Google search, including Google books, and I have not yet found a source that provides records of soldiers in the French Army prior to 1853. Can anyone suggest where I might look for French military records? Thanks, Richard

Karen, Your trsnscription shows one crucial word is missing - "Schulthei? zu Feil bei ?????? entsetzt". This might be translated as from Feil by ?????. The term bei (=by) indicates which Feil was meant or what recognizable community it was near. There are 2 Fiels in in the Kingdom of Würtemberg, but that is over 100 miles away. On a search for Feil in France on MapQuest, MapQuest points to a place about 2 miles S of Strasbourg city center. The map shows it at a location now called Ostwald (East Forest). Is that a mistake or has Feil been absorbed by Ostwald? Have you checked the records from the Church of the Latter Day Saints? Put in Daniel Chrisman born about 1705, I pull up one that has a child named Felix. It says he was born in Leidig, Buring, Germany (not familiar with that town maybe it should be Bayern or Baden), it gives his parents and children.
