    3. Bonsoir Ewald, Many thanks for your note. I don't have a lot of information, just the letter from my grandmother's cousin in Canada who did write that he was a Swiss Guard in Rome to Gregory and Pius, sometime around 1840. She wrote to my mother explaining some of our family history in France and then says that my mother's gr.grandfather was in the Swiss Guard. My gr. grandfather was Eugene Schumacher b. 1877 Bergheim, his parents were Joseph Schumacher b. 1827 (Rodern) and Francoise Lisse (Ostheim). His parents were Joseph Schumacher b. (Rodern1803) son of J. Georges Schumacher and Jeanne Heyberger de St. Hip. I'll keep looking, this is one piece of the puzzle I do not have. Merci beaucoup de votre aide. 3. Ewald, Thank you very much for your information and suggestions. I will start with the microfilms you listed. Bob From: "EWALD" <ewald.klein@gmail.com> Subject: Re: [A-L] The Abba name in France? Date: Sat, 19 Jan 2008 22:35:16 +0100 Bob, According to the site http://www.geopatronyme.com/ the name ABBA was present in Alsace & Lorraine between 1891-1915: -8 births in the department Moselle (Lorraine), in the town Walscheid -4 births in the department Meurthe-et-Moselle (Lorraine), in Cirey-sur-Vezouze and Bertrambois -1 birth in the department Vosges (Lorraine), in the town Val-d'Ajol At that time, the name ABBA was also present elsewhere in France than in Alsace & Lorraine. If you suspect that your ancestors originate in Moselle, than the first step would be to see the microfilms of Walscheid: -Naissances, publications de mariage, mariages, décès 1792-1820 - FHL INTL Film [ 2006968 Items 4-6 ] -Naissances (un autre filmage) 1793-1802 - FHL INTL Film [ 1895252 ] -Naissances, publications de mariage, mariages, décès 1821-1857 - FHL INTL Film [ 2006969 ] -Naissances, publications de mariage, mariages, décès 1858-1871 Naissances 1872-1889 - FHL INTL Film [ 2006970 ] -Naissances 1890-1892 Mariages, publications de mariage, mariages, décès 1872-1892 - FHL INTL Film [ 2006971 Items 1-3 ] Hope this helps. In brief, I am interested in information about Feil, Kreis Erstein, Alsace: Ownership, churches, and other records. I had it translated to: Johann Nikolaus Grossart was removed in 1704 from his job as mayor of Feil by Franz Friedrich von Sickingen because he as a Catholic was married to a Lutheran woman and let his children be reared in the belief of their mother. He emigrated and found a new home in the Disibodenberger Hof (large estate) in the protestant Dukedom Pfalz-Zweibruecken. I am trying to locate this Ort of Feil. In Meyers Ort, I found two place names for Feil: Feil 1) Wlr., Kr. Erstein, s. Ostwald 2) D., BA. Rockenhausen, s. Feilbingert. #2 is a village near Disibodenberger Hof called today Feilbingert which was previously two towns, but I think that it is too close to be considered emigration and it also had a Lutheran church. #1 is in Alsace, near Ostwald which had a Catholic church, Kreis Erstein, [south of Strassburg]. Wlr. = Weiler = hamlet Which had 43 inhabitants in 1913 according to Meyers How would I found out if this hamlet belonged to Franz Friedrich von Sickingen around 1700? Any chance that estate records are available? Or can anyone see anything that I am missing about the small story? ........>>

    3. While looking for a totally different family Pennsylvania connection, this came up on advanced google search. Pennsylvania Genealogical Magazine, Volume 44, number 1, Spring/Summer 2005 Articles on Connections Between Bischweiler, Alsace and America in the 1700's and separately on these families Paris, Brattler, Danner, Wild, Ribolet, Schwing, Gutknecht, Droques, Dock (including Maryland) most text available While I got it by chance the easiest way (I checked) is to put in google advanced search exact words Pennsylvania Genealogical Magazine Volume 44 number 1 (and following); click on Table of Contents. Number 2 also has Gartman of York County from Bischweiler Number 3 Bachoffen and Lang Number 4 Hauswirth and Pauser These sources are real gold mines for some. Lineages are there also. 1. Re: [A-L] Swiss Guard

    3. Christine, Swiss Guards have to be Catholic. Maybe he converted. You may be right about not being a Swiss Guard per se. See http://forums.catholic.com/showthread.php?t=110403 or if you can't bring this up do advanced google and put in "Swiss Guards" and as exact words "not Swiss" and you should catch it. It comes up as "Papal Guards". I do find the questions and information on A-L so interesting regarding history as well as one's own genealogy!
