    1. [A-L] Oberkischif near Franckendall
    2. According to the marriage certificate of my third great grandparents, Jacques Schwertzler and Marianne Schwartz, Marianne was born 2 October 1793 in Oberkischif near Franckendall. I have not been able to find a village named Oberkischif or Franckendall. Today I decided to Google Franckendall which resulted in a number of hits. Franckendall was a monastery built about 1119 by Eckenbertus Kemerer, a rich gentleman of the city of Wormes. The person who wrote this account was traveling from Spira to Wormes. From Spira it was twelve miles to Franckendall and then five miles to Wormes. I still am having no luck finding Franckendall and am looking for any suggestions. I found this information on page 399 of Coryat's Crudities: Reprinted from the Edition of 1611 This book can be found on Google Books. Curt Miller

    3. A "chartier" is a "tabellion" charged with the writing of chartes (charters). A tabellion usually was a person responsible for the conservation of acts written by royal notaries and the distribution of copies, until the beginning of the 17th century in the North of France. - Giliane -----Original Message----- From: alsace-lorraine-bounces@rootsweb.com [mailto:alsace-lorraine-bounces@rootsweb.com] On Behalf Of Dave Francis Sent: Saturday, April 05, 2008 10:57 AM To: alsace-lorraine@rootsweb.com Subject: Re: [A-L] Occupation translation from census Catherine, I don't know what a Chartier is, Tailleur D'habits is a tailor not to be confused with a Tailleur de Pierre, which is a stonecutter. Hello, I'm looking for the following information about 2 of the daughters of Nicolas MARCHAL & Marie PARMENTIER, married 24 October, 1722 in LaBroque, Bas Rhin, Alsace. #1..I show a daughter, Anna Maria, born 8 December, 1729, in Rothau, Bas Rhin. Is this the Marie MARCHAL who married Francois MARQUAIRE on 28 Jan, 1749, in Rothau? #2..Can someone tell me the birthdate of Marguerite Jeanne MARCHAL who married Louis de VOMECOURT on 28 May, 1754, in Rothau? I could not find her birth record in films of church records for Rothau. Many thanks for any help! 1. [A-L] SCHALL
    2. Charlie
    3. Hi Fabio, Here's a long shot. A SCHALL line existed in Eberbach Seltz, Bas-Rhin. These people were all from Eberbach-Seltz. Info from the AGAWE book of Eberbach-Seltz - Catholic marriage records 1788-1843. The other 2 volumes are: Baptisms 1735-1810 (1st SCHALL birth recorded in 1744) and Burials 1763-1813. 21 Nov 1815 - Anthony SCHALL, age 28, a farmer and son of Anthoni and Maria Anna AMBOS married Catharina FUHRMANN dau of Joseph+ and Maria Ursula STOLTZ+. I had remembered a SCHALL family in Riedseltz and that man, a son of the above, married a woman from Riedseltz and moved there and that info led me to Eberbach-Seltz. However, Auguste Antoine was not born in Riedseltz. Unfortunately I do not have the Eberbach-Seltz civil films and therefore can not tell if your Auguste Antoine is of this line. Perhaps someone on this list is researching that village and can be of assistance or perhaps a member is in Salt Lake City and can do a look-up for you. Good Luck. If he left in 1878 or 1879, MAYBE he was living in an area that did not become part of Germany since you say his passport was from France. This is merely a guess on my part, so please do not assume that I know more than you. Someone else suggested that you search Geneanet.com which is a very good idea. You can get an idea of the names of the French communities where your SCHALL surname was. Also suggested was to try other spellings which is a VERY good idea. My Alsatian surname is WADEL and it has been spelled MANY ways in records both in France and in the US. If you visit the archives for this list you will find a recent discussion about the spelling of surnames which is very informative. Looking at this website http://www.geopatronyme.com/ your SCHALL surname was VERY prevalent in department 67 Bas Rhin between 1891 and 1915. This may help you to narrow your search some. I hope that some of this helps you in your search.
