    3. Thanks for the comments. I guess I confused things about the dates. My information is that the Kaecheles left Germany in 1873 and the Bisches left in 1885. I have found a US passport application for a Frederick Bisch that indicates this gentleman was born in Westhofen and arrived is US May 5, 1885 aboard the SS Harmonia from Harve. I am wondering if this might be my great grandfather. This was in 1901 and he lived in Pittsburgh as did the applicant. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Linda H. 3. My family has told me that my great grandpa Franciscus "Frank" Romain came from Alsace-Lorraine. The only information I can find is the census that says he was from France and born in 1840. A record I found for a "Frank" Romain says he sailed from LeHavre and arrived in New York 1871. He somehow ended up in the German part of Lively Grove, Washington County, Illinois. He married a woman named Mary and had John, Dominic, Frederick and Anna (Annie). They moved to Keuterville, Idaho where there were many other German families in 1888-89. Mary died shortly thereafter and is said to be the first person buried in the Keuterville Cemetery. Frank died in 1925 and spent much of his later years with his daughter Annie. Frank's son Frederick married Josepha Kaufmann in 1908 and they homesteaded to Montana in 1913. Thank you, Angela Romain in Phoenix, AZ

    3. I too, am looking for some information on my great-grandfather. My aunt said his family was from Alsace Lorraine. I don't think any of them know where in the area. His name was Frederick Carl Matzat. He was born in 1860. He came to the United States in 1888 with his wife, Sophie Finis and a young daughter. I don't know her name and she passed away soon after arriving here. It is said the name was LaMatzat and was changed at some point in time. If there is any small bits of information, I would truely appreciate the help. Thank You, Diane

    3. Hi Sharon, Yes, I am looking into this family. Sorry I don't have any information on your Henriette but I'm copying another person who also has Jacoby family members. Perhaps she has more information. I have very little information to go on. I know that they were from Alsace-Lorraine, but do not know which region specifically. The person in particular whose relatives I am looking for is Henriette Jacobi b. between 1818 and 1823. Her parents died when she was young and she went to live with another family. They treated her badly so she ran away. Family history says that she married a man by the name of Reuban Elsass Lorthringen and then somehow ended up in Prussia where she remarried. I know this is very sketchy, but if you have any thoughts as to where I should research, I'd really appreciate it! I am leaning towards the Bas-Rhin region, but that is only a hunch and not backed up by any proof. Thank you, Sharon Baldwin --------------------------------- You rock. 3. Curt, Another suggestion: As you have suggested, Oberkischif may have been absorbed into Frankenthal or another town. Or the name of the village may be of a local dialect or the original writing may have been mistranscribed. Is the marriage certificate you have a religious one? If so, does it name the church? Is it signed by the pastor/priest? This could give you a major clue for further search. Gloria

    3. Curt, It looks to me that Franckendall is now called Frankenthal (Pfalz- there are other Frankenthals in Germany), which is about 5-6 miles from Worms. As per Wikipedia, the ruins of the Augustinian Monastery you noted is in the center of town. 2. Hi List, A friend sent this website to me. If you go to _http://www.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~usgenweb/special/ppcs/ppcs.html_ (http://www.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~usgenweb/special/ppcs/ppcs.html) a list of States will come up. If you click on New York, there are four old postcards of Ellis Island. When you click on the individual pictures, they enlarge. Just wanted to share! 2. The marriage took place in Remering in 1816. It is a French civil record. The Schwertzlers were catholic so I assume Marianne Schwartz was also catholic. I found records at the Family History Center.
