Am so very new at this and am requesting any help in finding out about these family relatives. I am trying to find information on my husbands father's name of Seif. We have a Mathias SEIF born 1727 Landstuhl, Pfalz and died 26 February 1804 Rh P who married a Gertrude STEFFAN on 17 October 1769 in St. Andraes, Austria Hungary. I have found a Johann Gotz born 1735 in DT Lothringen who had a son named Thomas GOTZ born 1758 In Austria Hungary. Would there be any GOTZ/GOETZ's in this region during and before the 1700's? I do a lot of old image enhancement. I don't know that my image software is better or worse than other brands. However, I use Paint Shop Pro Version 5. The most frequent enhancement command I use is Colors - adjust. Quite often IMAGE - noise - despeckle. This command however can also dull the detail. I bring the images home from the LDS film viewer that has a computer attached and scans directly to my thumb drive. In many cases however, I find that the image right there at the LDS center on the viewer is hard to beat; It's just that, given the fairly restricted hours of opening of my local LDS center, when I am doing a large scale data extraction I spend all my time at the center just grabbing hundreds of images, then at home I scan through them. I notice that you say "JPG". I hate JPG files and that shadowy ghost image around everything. I do my capturing in BMP or TIFF (even though they are large) then at home, after enhancing, go to shades of grey, 16 color, and make a permanent storage in .PNG format. Which broadly speaking is as small as the files can get without losing detail. I would be most interested to hear recommendations from others on this tech issue. I don't have any software solution that works for everything but have been able to improve some bad images using my Olympus Camera software. These were digital photos taken from the microfilm viewer. For viewing film or fiche on the machine (overhead hood type machine) it sometimes helps to put yellow or goldenrod paper stock in the viewer for the image to project on. I have found some resources online with common words used in these documents, but I am stuck. One of the documents is a death record. There are what appear to be 'survivors' listed. I am having trouble with the words that are preceding the names. It appears to say something like" Pr***** nous et Pra**f*f*** de S**pere f** Aran Block (the father's name) Ca*p*t**" This is one line of the document. I am having trouble with the "P" words. Does anyone know what the wording would be on a document like this, where it describes the family members left behind? Any why do they list the ages of all these people? Any help is appreciated!! This is off message but some time ago one of the listers was looking for information on Alsace food. There is a famous restaurant in San Francisco (Fleur de Lys) the chef Hubert Keller...who is from Alsace. I believe his restaurant is one of the top 40 French restaurants in the US He published a cookbook "The Cuisine of Hubert Keller" in 1996 which has some food from Alsace.
