Bonjour - here is some info on Cahokia, IL Cahokia is a village in St. Clair County, Illinois, United States. As of the 2000 census, the village had a population of 16,391. The name is a reference to the Cahokia tribe, a part of the Illini confederacy. Cahokia Mounds, a Native American landmark near Collinsville, Illinois was also named for this tribe which lived in the Illinois area at the time of French contact. Cahokia is the home of the Cahokia Courthouse (c1740) and the Jarrot Mansion (c1810). you can read more at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cahokia,_Illinois blessings - Blessings~Pam~ Pam Frierdich-Staley http://www.frierdich-staley-familytree.com http://www.michael-steppig-family-tree.com Researching: Frierdich, Friedrich, Michalek (Michael, Micheal), Schallom, Hatter, Kleyer, Rapp, Mentel, Schellhorn,Roos, Bangert, Diesel, Keifer, Mees/Maeys/Maas/Mayss, Reiss/Ries/Reis, Steppig, Hortel, Braun, Monsen, Staley/Stehli Mitchell, Weber, Kerner, Simpson, Diesser, Thoele/Thole, Meyer, Fields, White ----- Original Message ----- From: "ginic" <nicole.gignoux@wanadoo.fr> To: <alsace-lorraine@rootsweb.com> Sent: Friday, May 09, 2008 8:35 AM Subject: Re: [A-L] Family LENTZ Bonjour et merci à tous ceux qui m'ont si gentiment répondu, donné des conseils, des idées, des pistes.. Seems like the JÜNG name is quite popular! I too have this name in my extended family: Vincent JÜNG born about 1779 married Agathe SCHILLIG. She died 05 April 1822 in Soppe-le-Bas. They had a daughter, Anne Marie JÜNG born 22 November 1815 in Soppe-le-Bas. She married Francois Joseph WADEL on 14 November 1838 in Soppe-le-Bas. Francois Joseph was the son of Joseph WADEL and Anne Marie JENN and was the brother of my third great grandfather, Jean Thiebaud WADEL. Francois Joseph was born 04 April 1805 in Ammertzwiller. Francois Joseph WADEL and Anne Marie JÜNG had 10 children, 6 were born in Diefmatten, 3 in Soppe-le-Bas and the last was born in the US in Rochester, Monroe County, NY where Francois Joseph and Anne Marie immigrated to in 1854. My 3rd great grandfather, Jean Thiebaud WADEL had settled there in the early 1830's. Also a cousin of theirs, Jean WADEL, born 1820, immigrated to Rochester with Francois Joseph and his family in 1854. Francois Joseph WADEL died on 10 August 1878 in Rochester and Anne Marie JÜNG WADEL on 07 March 1882 also in Rochester. Jim, All the CD census of 1836 are from Bas Rhin one of the two " departements" of Alsace ( the other is Haur Rhin) The " département" Meurthe et Moselle and not Meurthe is one of the four countries of Lorraine ( like Moselle, Vosges and Meuse.) You don't find any information in the census of Bas-Rhin ( Bischwiller, Haguenau, Wissembourg are all towns of the Bas Rhin like Strasbourg.) I ask friends of Lorraine if they have an answer , I wait of an answer. Nicole

Nicole, It may take courage but once you are in the US, you might try by doing a step by step tracing of names with those you already have, actually calling some people in the DeKalb area who have the same surnames names. I am no longer subscribed to ancestry.com but can still get into basic index; if someone else can help it would be great. Get to the 1930 census using those who might still be alive and see their children listed. Go to yahoo.com People Search or even better, www.whitepages.com where you can see people with the same surnames. Sometimes you can see ages so go for older people. Call or have one of your US relatives give a few a call. The DeKalb Illinois area seems to be the obvious choice. I did a bit of checking and there are Lentz and Schumacher there. The name Weddige seemed more unusual but when I gave it a try the name came up in Chicago and suburbs (I used to live there) but people do move around and DeKalb is not that far away. If you know the families religious affiliation you might also google for churches in DeKalb and write them. I know this sounds confusing but maybe someone who is subscribed to ancestry.com and is in the US (I am not) can help. Good luck and bon voyage. Gloria Ishida

Hello Nicole: I am sorry I cannot tell you about the living Lentz relatives--our census schedules end in 1930, but I can give you a few ideas. In DeKalb County, Illinois, not too far from Chicago, is a cemetery called East Pierce Cemetery. This cemetery is the resting place for Albert Schumacher and his wife Judith. Albert b. 1879 d. 1947, and Judith b. 1882, died 1954. Also in the same cemetery lies Frederick Lentz, father, b. Sept. 17, 1851,died March 1, 1938,; Mary Alice Lentz (I was correct out her name) b. June 25, 1859, died July 3, 1929. Also their son W. (William) Ralph, b. Jan. 21, 1880, died Jan. 28, 1959, and Alma Maude, their daughter born February 17, 1885, died July 24, 1918. There is also a John Lentz 1869-1945 and Anna L. Lentz 1870-1956. My suggestion is to find a local library in DeKalb County, and find if they have newspaper microfilm, go through those microfilm for the correct dates and find obituaries, and in the obituaries in our country they almost always list the surviving members of the family. I do this all the time with my genealogy. You can probably track down living family members that way. I am sure the librarian would be happy to help you. I am delighted that you write a few words in French--I have not taken French in 58 years--I have been out of high school that long, but find I can still read it. Bon chance, Dorothy Baker Gainesville, Florida
