Dear Kenneth, I too am having the same problem trying to find the birthplace of my Mangin and Seyer relatives from A-L. If you find any hints etc, please let me know as this has been a brick wall for several years. They came out of Le HAvre on the Bretagne and the Biurgoyne in 1888 and 1889. They spoke French and considered themselves French too. thanks Mary Anne Jones maryannejones@comcast.net ----- Original Message ----- From: "Kenneth Lampel" <kenlampel@yahoo.com> To: <ALSACE-LORRAINE@rootsweb.com> Sent: Tuesday, June 17, 2008 8:06 AM Subject: [A-L] Lampel Emigration >I just joined this group, after hearing from my Great Aunt this weekend, >that the Lampel line of my ancestors came over from Alsace-Lorraine area. I just joined this group, after hearing from my Great Aunt this weekend, that the Lampel line of my ancestors came over from Alsace-Lorraine area. I found a Leonhard Lampel that would match my Great-Great Grandfather if I could find out where he came from. I searched and searched and found he was on the ship SS Herder, came into CastleGarden, and left form ports Hamburg or Havre. Dennis, This was a form of benefit society.? See the Wikipedia article on that topic http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Benefit_society More specifically, it was an immigrant mutual aid society.? There is a useful two-part article on that topic at http://www.ancestry.com/learn/library/article.aspx?article=2157?and http://www.ancestry.com/learn/library/article.aspx?article=696 This topic has come up before on the Alsace-Lorraine list.? Take a look at http://archiver.rootsweb.ancestry.com/th/read/alsace-lorraine/1998-05/0894565842 and the messages in response to it. Societe' Alsacienne de Secours Mutuels "Secours" more literally translates to help or aid than rescue. "Au secours!" is the French cry for "Help!" but that's a specialized use. So, I read the name in English as "Alsatian Mutual Aid Society", for which there would be more frequent need than rescue.
