Hello Rachelle, Sharon, and listers, I am not aware of any medal given to Franco-Prussian war soldiers. These fought for France indeed, but France was defeated. It was the end of the Second Empire and Alsace and Moselle became German. As to your ancestor, Rachelle, the first thing to know is his place of origin, especially for a quite common surname like Spielmann Sharon: the Ste Helene medal was given to soldiers still alive in 1857. However I doubt that they were able to traceall those who emigrated to America or elsewhere. Wow, considering the astronomical death toll among Napoleon's soldiers in Russia, that was one lucky/ amazing man! Too bad he didn't leave a diary or journal. Thanks, Etienne, I wonder if the Frnech government would issue one posthumously for an ancestor that was missed. In 1857, Jacob Schirck was living in Warren, Pennsylvania. I do have copies of his discharge papers that were scanned and sent to me by a cousin. A while back, I attended a genealogy seminar. The lecturer mentioned that a group of French (Napoleonic) soldiers had settled together in Ohio in the 1820s. My 3G great grandfather (Michael A. Nippert) settled in Ohio in the 1820s and family stories said he and his brothers served in Russia under Napoleon. I have found proof of military service for one brother--he stayed in Alsace. When I chatted with the lecturer afterwards, he didn't have much more information: just a couple of books in French. Does anyone have any information or better yet, know a website or book, (preferably in English or German) about this *colony*! Christina
Thank you for this informatin Etienne. I went to the site, but my ancestor's surname gave no results. I am curious about the medals given to the soldiers. What about in the Franco-Prussian War? Did those soldiers receive any medals and is there any website to check for them? This would have been fighting for Napoleon the 3rd. Thanks for any help. Trying to find any records of my great-grandfather, Frank Spielman from Alsace-Lorraine France. Is there anywhere to write for info? Was Catholic. And when he would drink to much he would put on his uniform and remember the war. Rachelle Wildermuth-Bohinski
I am looking for any information about Valentine "Fritz" Adolph, born Feb. 28, 1862 in Alsace-Lorraine, France. Valentine immigrated to the United States in 1872. Mother was Elizabeth Snell (maiden name) Father, Valentine born 1826. Alsace-Lorraine, France. Some said they lived in Artolsheim. We don't have anything written (for sure) until they came to America in 1872. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks, Karen Adolph

"if you could see if you can find any Morian's or a Jacob Marsac in your book." Sorry Kathy but he's not listed nor are any with this or the other surname you provided. Also remember this book only covers the years 1792-1815 and the person had to be alive when the "survey" was taken in the 1850s-1860s. It also only covers Bas-Rhin. Another book was completed by the same author but was not published by AGAWE. Charlie

Hi Ernie, The name SHERBINANT / SHERBENANT is not a name known in Alsace-Lorraine, or elsewhere in France. It is a phonetic spelling of your ancestor's name, like FERDINAND (this name is a given name and also a surname). The Alsatian pronunciation of FERDINAND is very near the pronunciation of SHERBINANT. According to www.geopatronyme.com , the name FERDINAND was mostly present in: 1. Vosges, Lorraine (Martinvelle, Plainfaing, Godoncourt, Saint-Dié) 2. Moselle, Lorraine (Metz, Forbach, Yutz) 3. Bas-Rhin, Alsace(Haguenau, Strasbourg) 4. Meurthe-et-Moselle, Lorraine (Nancy) between 1891-1915. Heve a nice Sunday Ewald ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ ----- Original Message ----- From: <ernie.olson@comcast.net> To: <alsace-lorraine@rootsweb.com> Sent: Friday, July 04, 2008 5:09 PM Subject: [A-L] Your opinions please > I would appreciate any comments any of you may have on the following: > > My great grandfather was born 4 April 1846 in France.
