Hi all, I've just created an Alsachat photos sub-gallery containing photos of present-day Sondersdorf. These photos were sent to me by Karine Blind, who's family lives in Sondersdorf. She still lives in a village nearby. Sondersdorf is located at the southern end of Alsace, near the Swiss border. It is the home of my great grandfather, Augustin (a.k.a. August, Auguste) Erbland and many of his ancestors. I've also added a copy of this birth record and his parents' marriage record to my regular Alsachat photo gallery at: http://alsachat.net/gallery/view_album.php?set_albumName=Mardon Mardon
Hello I am a descent of a Schang as well as Portier. Feel free to check my family tree at http://gw4.geneanet.org/index.php3?b=matulich Let me know if you have any matches to your research There is a tremendous amount of info on Geneanet, It is primarily a French site, but has other info as well. I was able to get information from the Latter Day Saints that show that persons name Schang were born about the 1600's through the 1800's. In the area of Luneville, Meurthe-et- moselle, Folschviller,Moselle, Valmaont, Altvillier, Sengbus, St. Aold, Moselle, Vahl-ebersing, Vahl, Ebersing, Moselle, France. I did look at this website http://www.genealogy.tm.fr/acte.htm , but I realize I have to change it in to English to be able to read it. The information I have on my Schang family line links up to Josef Schang from Heufield, Hungary, Born: 1735, Died: 24Mar1813 was married to Susanne Portier. So my question is which would be my next step in following my family link? I understand it will be best to follow the family ancestry line back to where it began. I am looking for Catharine LEININGER. She was born around 1821 (based on age listed in birth records of her children) She was married to Georg (or Johann Georg) CASSEL. They lived in the village of La Petite Pierre, Bas Rhin Alsace, FRA. Georg was born in Volksburg. I don't know where she was born. They were married around 1840 I have not found their marriage or her birth records in La Petite Pierre or Volksberg. Does anyone have the 1835 census CD for the La Petite Pierre district? If so could you look for Catherine? Has anyone come across a Catherine LEININGER that matches what I know? I suspect that she was from the hilly region around La Petite Pierre. (Krum Elsas/Alsace Bousse). The CASSELs were Protestant. They lived in the same cluster of small villages from the time when it was part of the Holy Roman Empire and not annexed by France. Thanks for any help you can give. Even a negative answer will help me figure out where to not look. Charles Laun

For all European research, you must have a village name, or at least a small region with a few villages, because that is where all the records are kept! There are few to no departement, county or region-wide censuses or other general surveys such as our US Census records. So, you must do your American or Canadian research, before trying to "jump the pond" back to Europe. I have a number of suggestions for ways to do that here: http://genweblog.blogspot.com/2006/02/european-research.html That said, with a relatively rare name like Zarr, you might find some help here: http://genweblog.blogspot.com/2006/03/surnames.html Finally, I have an introduction to research in the Alsace: http://genweblog.blogspot.com/2006/05/alsace.html I hope these are helpful to you, Valorie -- All my pages: http://valorie.zimmerman.googlepages.com -- Resources for Alsace-Lorraine list members: http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~valorie/Alsace-Lorraine-L.htm ------------------------------- To unsubscribe from the list, please send an email to ALSACE-LORRAINE-request@rootsweb.com with the word 'unsubscribe' without the quotes in the subject and the body of the message
Köln/Cologne was never part of A-L. Napoleon did occupy it and there is a historical result of that occupation. It seems that when Napoleon occupied Köln there were no house numbers. So he commanded that a rider go through the town and number each building consecutively with chalk. One particular fragrance shop was numbered 4711. Their product was given that number as its name, and is still sold today http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/4711_%28brand%29 At 03:23 PM 8/10/2008, you wrote: >From: "Ralph Taylor" <rt-sails@comcast.net> >Subject: Re: [A-L] ALSACE-LORRAINE -- >To: <alsace-lorraine@rootsweb.com> > >RE: "Alsace Lorraine in North West Germany near Cologne" >"Would any one on this list know if when France controlled the area >Northwest of Cologne in period 1792 to 1806 or maybe later was that area >known as Alsace Lorraine then?" > >To my knowledge, the area northwest of Cologne (German = Koln) has never >been part of either Alsace (German = Elzass) or Lorraine (German = >Lothringen). RE: "Alsace Lorraine in North West Germany near Cologne" "Would any one on this list know if when France controlled the area Northwest of Cologne in period 1792 to 1806 or maybe later was that area known as Alsace Lorraine then?" To my knowledge, the area northwest of Cologne (German = Koln) has never been part of either Alsace (German = Elzass) or Lorraine (German = Lothringen). It may have been under the control of Napoleon's France subsequent to 1804. RE: " Surnames:? Thiery, Metz, Bles, Delese" OR -- place names? Metz is the capital of Lorraine. Thiery is a commune in the arrondissement of Nice in the region of Alpes-Maritime.
Sorry Jean, this is totally wrong. The part of Germany around Landau, in Palatinate (Pflatz), was French ONLY during a short period of time (French Revolution), as written by "wwkersner". It was then named "Departement du Mont Tonnerre". It was German the rest of the time, as it is today (part of Rheinland- Pfaltz). As far as I know (but I may be wrong), it wasn't considered as part of Alsace. It is anachronous to associate Alsace and Lorraine at the beginning of the 1800's. They always were separate provinces, apart from the German (Prussian) annexion between 1871 and 1918. Moreover, as mentionned several times on this list, only a part of Lorraine (more or less the today departement Moselle) was annexed to Germany ("Elsass- Lothringen"). Looking at http://www.genealogy.tm.fr/acte.htm if your grandparents were from Alsace Lorraine, the surname Thiery is most likely from the department des Vosges, Bles from Moselle. Metz is rather common in Alsace... You will need to gather more information about them in the US to narrow down the are they came from. - Giliane -----Original Message----- From: alsace-lorraine-bounces@rootsweb.com [mailto:alsace-lorraine-bounces@rootsweb.com] On Behalf Of pmal69@aol.com Sent: Saturday, August 09, 2008 6:06 PM To: ALSACE-LORRAINE@rootsweb.com Subject: [A-L] Looking for ancestors.... Then after WWI, it reverted to France until the Germans took it in WWII. Since WWII, it has been part of France. My grandfather came from there. If any of you know about Adam Becker and Maria Brunon Becker in Alsace, let me know. I've been looking for their hometown for over thirty years. Both were killed in an accident in the 1860's. Three of the children came to America and I believe three stayed behind. I want to get past this brick wall and would appreciate any information you can give.
