Hi David -- Sedan is in the Ardennes, so this list will not be appropriate. It appears that the Champagne-Ardenne list will be most fruitful: http://lists.rootsweb.ancestry.com/index/intl/FRA/FRA-CHAMPAGNE-ARDENNE.html I also find quite a few queries mentioning Sedan in the Gen-fr list, http://lists.rootsweb.ancestry.com/index/intl/FRA/GEN-FR.html Be aware, however, that Gen-fr is gatewayed to the Gen-fr newsgroup, and as such, will get more spam that you are used to seeing on strictly email lists. Yes, the list is still active. If you think you have missed some posts, go to the list archives at http://archiver.rootsweb.com to search or browse. You probably got no reply because President-elect Obama's have been discussed quite a few times over the last few months. Plus we normally see a bit less list activity as we near the height of the holidays. Hello Listers, Mardon asked about the forest named "die Hartt" on Cassini's map. Etymology: Hart / Hard means forest in old German. Geography : an area with a poor and stony soil, unsuitable for agriculture, between the rivers Rhine and Ill, east to Mulhouse, from Bartenheim near Basel in the south to Blodelsheim in the north. No running water in this forest and no village. See (long URL!): <http://www.viamichelin.fr/viamichelin/fra/dyn/controller/Cartes?strCountry=1424&strAddress=&strMerged=ottmarsheim&x=22&y=8&ie=UTF-8 > History : the "Forêt de la Hardt" was owned by the Habsburg family, then (when Alsace became French in 1648) became "forêt royale". At that time, it was parted into 16-20 ha parts with almost 1000 landstones with the royal sign ("fleur de lis"). Now "forêt domaniale", i.e. belonging to the state. Hello Listers, after the recent disussion about Cassini's maps and "Alsatia Superior", here a short sketch about the region named "the Sundgau", which refers to the hilly and agricultural area in the south of Alsace, between Mulhouse and the Swiss border. The name appeared around the year 750, when the Duchy of Alsace was parted into two Counties: Nordgau in the north (more or less the today Bas-Rhin) and the Sundgau in the south (more or less Haut-Rhin), or Alsatia Superior. In German, Gau means "region". Rapidly the name Nordgau disappeared, whereas the Sundgau was limited to the area described above, which was owned mainly by the "Comtes de FERRETTE" (=von PFIRT). When the last of this family (Ulrich III de Ferrette) died in 1324 without male posterity, his daughter Jeanne herited the county and, by her marriage to Albert II de HABSBOURG, from Austria, the territory was then owned by this wealthy family. It was included in the so- called "anterior Austria", with Ensisheim as the capital. The Sundgau suffered many times from wars and the passage of armies, especially the Swedish during the Thirty Years war (1618-1648). When the major part of Alsace became French in 1648, the Habsburgs had to abandon all their possessions and titles in Alsace. In 1659 the king of France gave the "Comté de Ferrette" to his minister Mazarin, from whom it arrived to the today princes of Monaco (Grimaldi) - as Mardon wrote it in a post last November. Source: Dictionnaire du Haut-Rhin. There is very active historical association of the Sundgau: <http://www.sundgau-histoire.asso.fr/> (in French) Best wishes, Etienne > Le 27 nov. 08 à 00:21, Mardon a écrit : > > > Other things on the map that I’d like to know more about are the > area > > labeled “Die Hartt” and the label “SVN T GOW” for the area that was > > later known as the Suntgaw, a.k.a. the "Suntgau" and the "Sundgau" > > Mardon

I'm sorry, I mis-typed and wasn't specific. I meant the FHL - Family History Library, and that is actually a part of FamilySearch.org. The word lists and other research helps are here: http://www.familysearch.org/eng/search/RG/frameset_rhelps.asp?Page=./research/Titlef/Titlef.asp&ActiveTab=Title If that convoluted URL doesn't work for you, go to http://www.familysearch.org to the Research Helps tab > Articles > F > scroll down to France. Lots of valuable help there, free. Some of it can be purchased for around a dollar at your local FHC (Family History Center) also. For awhile they also sold a CD with all these help files on it for around $5 -- you might ask if this is still available. Be sure to look up the French research helps on theFHC website, and print out the word list. It is a huge help. Thanks for the input. Am going through two reels at the LDS right now. Very confusing since I do not know French. Am still glad to find his siblings and hope I can put together more pieces of the family. -----Original Message----- From: alsace-lorraine-bounces@rootsweb.com [mailto:alsace-lorraine-bounces@rootsweb.com] On Behalf Of Etienne Herrbach Sent: Saturday, November 22, 2008 4:56 AM To: alsace-lorraine@rootsweb.com Subject: Re: [A-L] Bischwiller Hello Marilyn, you're right, your gr-grandfather did most probably speak Alsatian dialect and understand German. Alsatian was (and still is, but less and less) the daily language for Alsatians. His birth record was in French because Alsace was in France in 1854. In Baden too, dialectal forms of German are spoken, which belong to the Alemannic group like Alsatian (at least in its major parts). Therefore, there is some mutual understanding between Alsace and Baden. As discussed earlier, Bavaria is a distinct German region, far from Alsace (apart from the part of Palatinate that was ruled for some time by Bavaria). There are also Bavarian dialects, which are unrelated to the Alemannic group. Hi Bob, Sorry we don't have a match. Ann
Gloria, My replies are inserted in your text. Gloria wrote: Bob, here are two books. Jews of Brooklyn (Brandeis Series in American Jewish History, Culture, and Life) (Hardcover) (found on google books) by Ilana Abramovitch (Editor), Sean Galvin (Editor) The Jewish Community of Williamsburg Brooklyn, NY (Amazon.com) George Kranzier Publ. Columbis University, 1954 1136 pgs I'll track these down. googling: http://www.brooklynjews.org/ Lain's Brooklyn Directory for the Year Ending May 1st 1892 two Leopolds, both butchers These listings mark an interesting point of confusion that could catch any of us. Both of these Leopold Blochs were butchers, both were from France, both had wives named Fannie and 3 children. The first is 15 years senior to my great grandfather who is the second. What was the sister's name? If she married would she be living nearby? Check first names near her brother on the census. The Leopold Bloch, butcher, in Brooklyn census (France) has a young wife Fanny; also in 1880. Is he your great-grandfather? He is probably my great grandfather but he is a roomer and I can't be sure. No sign of sister, Sara What part of the Jewish religion did he belong to? You might see what synagogues existed at that time in Brooklyn; perhaps one would have records of marriages, if the sister married, or deaths. The family synagogue (Reform Temple) is Beth Elohim, the one I grew up in. It moved; the family remained in the congregation. I have the LDS film of the early marriages. No hits. Thanks for your thoughts. Bob Teitelbaum
