At first I didn't agree, but now I think the idea has merit. I think either one or both parents are noted as having died in Boulay, Moselle. Not sure if it is a form of "deux" before decedes or not. But I think at least one of the parents died in Boulay. "DeFrancaise" would be an unusual surname. I'm not certain on the "pied", that's just what it looks like to me. Can't do that as he is the one not born in Niederroedern; as I mentioned I checked censuses in 12 surrounding communities and parents not to be found. Thanks so much Dave, for the extra search. I hadn't yet gone to later years. Grandfather's name was Valentin (he stayed and died in 1852) and his son Jacques was the one who signed his death certificate. Evidently Uncle Jacques never married and lived a long time. After his father's death, I found him living with his sister and brother-in-law. I will check that 1884 death record and see what else is there. It is amazing what seems as a downturn for Valentin, Jr. if it was economic. This was a well-known and at one time a well off village family. It looks like young Jacques was an apprentice to someone in Seltz in 1856; at least the age fits and his aunt and her husband were living in Seltz also. Another related family , some of the Eichenlaubs immigrated to Bellevue, Ohio around 1852/53 and I think that is why GG Grandmother went there - seems by herself at 21. But she missed a census! She married a year after her arrival to a German from Baden, Nassau. Thanks too for the hint on Breitenstein although Marguerite's father, Georges was a resident of Niederroedern when she married Valentin, Jr. I had wondered where the family originated, probably much earlier from Switzerland or "Germany". But her mother was a Walther, a very old family there. I will check Hagenau. I had thought i had pretty much finished a narrative on GG Grandmother Catherine after our visit to Niederroedern four years ago; but I decided, after the civil records and censuses were available, I'd put on the finishing touches. I expect it¹s possible Valentin JACOB might have gone into the military and been stationed away from Niederroedern. Marguerite might have come home to her parents for the birth of George in 1838, but Jacques perhaps born at their station. A reasonable possibility would be for the parents to have died during Valentin¹s tour of duty, and the surviving children, Jacques and siblings, to be sent to his grandparents and others in Niederroedern as a foster child. This brought to mind a question, re: the Alsace Censuses online. Is there any chance the authorities might have enumerated military installations in much the same way [much later] US Censuses enumerated various bases, ie: the Philippines, and naval ships, etc? Two of his siblings (includes my gg grandmother) are with their grandparents in the same year. Other relatives are also in Niederroedern at this time. My gg grandmother, Catherine, age 17, is still with her grandfather in 1851 and went to the US either in 1854 or 1855. Jacques and older brother Valentin went later. Their was a son, George, born 1838 in the Niederroedern records; Jacques seems to have been born somewhere other than Niederroedern. Nothing in US indicates where. The problem is parents, Valentin Jacob and his wife Marguerite, and George have disappeared. Last I have checked deaths in Niederroedern from 1840 - 1846 - nothing. I have checked censuses in as many surrounding villages that I see nearby.  I am sure that they just didn't immigrate to America. They were last seen in the 1836 census. Any speculation on what could have happened to them?  Does the word after Jacques's "enfant ...." help I wonder. Thanks so much. Hello, Does anyone on the list know if I can get a record of Ignatius Jaeger, wife, and 4 children6 and under came to the United States between 1834 and 1836. I think there might be paper work they had to fill out to leave the country. Where can I find it. Thanks Pattie Cooper

There is a wonderful website http://www.memoiredeshommes.sga.defense.gouv.fr/ that I have been using for years to get information about relatives who died while serving in the French military during World War I. Over the years this site has expanded its range of coverage to include later conflicts (World War II, the French involvement in Indochina, Korea, Algeria), and just recently a much earlier period (the Compagnie des Indes; coverage at the moment is 1721-1770). They had plans some years ago for a database covering the Napoleonic period, but that has apparently been shelved, at least for the time being. Although the site isn't specific to Alsace or Lorraine, it will be of help to many of us whose relatives from those regions were in the military. I've been doing some sample searches this morning in the Compagnie des Indes database of passengers/crew, just looking for surnames that might come from our region (Schmitt, Muller, Schneider, Meyer, etc.). Most of the results at the moment are transcriptions of passenger/crew lists, but some are available in high-resolution full-color scans. If you haven't used this resource give it a try.
