Dickey at the National Archives as Private, Company A, 39th Alabama Infantry Regiment. He didn’t survive very long after joining. The 39th Artillery was formed 10 March 1862 and he died approximately six months later based on the date Narcissa Ann Wolfe Dickey was appointed administratrix of his estate. From March to April 1862, he learned how to be an infantryman. They were formally accepted into the service of the Confederate States on 1 April 1982. His first paycheck was 10 May 1862 for the period 10 March to 10 May 1862 for $11.00 per month, a total of $22.00. Within a few days after being paid, they were loaded onto railcars and transported toward Corinth, MS. While enroute they were told to disimbark at Tupelo, MS where they met and joined veterans of the recent Battle of Shiloh, Tennesse whose stories about the battle shook up a lot of the new soldiers. Near the end of May, the brigade had settled into camp a few miles north of Tupelo, at the town of Saltilla, MS where they were issued their firearms and practiced loading and firing them. On 29 May 1862, Company A reported only 43 men and 1 lieutenant present for duty. By 30 June 1862, the company was nearly back to strenth with 81 but Captain Joseph C. Clayton noted in his journal that the company had suffered much from sickness and exposure. On 28 August 1862, they began a march through the mountains northward to Kentucky. They reached Munfordswille, KY, surrounded the city in the evening the the next morning, the federals within the town surrendered. They continued on a march into the heart of Kentucky, reaching Hodgenville and Bardstown in October 1862. They witnessed an inauguration of the Conferate governor of Kentucy at Frankfort. The inauguraton festivities were short lived as a federal army reached them at Perryville on 7 October 1862 and the Battle of Perryville was fought. It is doubtful if Thomas S. Dickey fought in the battle because his wife was appointed administratrix of his extate on 4 October 1862 which after the date the battle is officially recorded as occurring. He may have died of illness and exposure sometime during the march. (Information extracted from Civil War Website http://www.texramp.net/~meowen/kentucky.htm Abstract of Wills Book A & B Thomas S.
