Posted on: Pike County, Al Query Forum Reply Here: http://cgi.rootsweb.com/~genbbs/genbbs.cgi/USA/Al/Pike/1638 Surname: WOLFE, DICKEY, DANIEL ------------------------- Thank you for the verification. He certainly didn't survive long >From 10 March 1862 when the 39th Artillery was formed until just before October 1962 when his wife was appointed administrix of his estate. About 6 months. He must have died of illness because from March to April 1862 he learned how to be an infantryman; first paycheck was 10 May 1862. Then they were loaded onto railcars and transported by railroad toward Corinth, MS but changed enroute to Tupelo and jointed other seasoned veterans of Shiloh. Didn't even receive their firearms until the end of May. While encamped at Tupillo, MS, many men became sick. On 28 August they began a march through the mountains northward to Kentucky. They took Munfordswville, KY, stayed there a few days and continued on a march into the heart in Kentucky and watched the inauguration of the Confederate governor of Kentucky, at Frankfort. On the next day (5 October 1862) the Battle of Perryville was fought. Since his wife was appointed administratrix on 19 October 1862, he possibly could have fought and died in the Battle of Perryville, but if so, she received the news rather rapidly of her husband's death. It's possible but more likely he died before the battle.
