Here's what I know. He was born 3/12/1802 in what became Marion District, S.C. He moved with the rest of the family to Clarendon about 1810 and to Pike County circa 1831. Now the family legend ... in 1833 he ran away with Sara Mims to the Arkansas frontier, because she was of a "moorish jewish" family. She died two years later, leaving the daughter Suzanna. R.D. returned to Pike Co. and married Sarah Whittington. Richard had at least one sibling, a brother Hiram, who moved to Mississippi about the same time. I think the cousin marriage story makes good sense too. My father didn't know about the second marriage and thought we had "jewish" blood.
