All BUT, James Champion Mathews,- Mathis- Matthews, as well as other spellings. Champion came back from the war and settled in Pike County, Al. 1870 Census, Crenshaw Co., Al. Tsp. # 9 Griffin Matthews 60 farming Ga. ($500/ $450) Malinda 49 keeping house. Ga. Nancy E. 18 Al. Orren J. 14 Al. Isaiah G. 11 Al. John A. 8 Al. William S. 1 Al. 1880 Crenshaw Co., Al. Griffin Mathews, age 71, farm laborer Malinda, age 59, John A., age 18 William S., age 11 Griffin, d/ 1884,Crenshaw Co., Al. This family lost three sons in the war. James Champion was the only one to come back. I have not finished researching the members of this family in Crenshaw Co., Al., as of yet.
