In the 1850 census for Pike Co., William and "Rocksy" Tanton were living in the household of 43-year-old William Shields and his large family. I can find no evidence of this couple following the 1850 census entry. What happened to them? I believe that they had at least one child, John Tanton, later in 1850 or early 1851, who went on to marry the widow of one of the Shields sons that William and Roxanne Taunton were living with in 1850. If William Taunton died in the 1850s, did Roxanne remarry, and if so, to whom? I can find no record of the possible son, John Taunton, prior to his 1880 census entry in Geneva Co., AL, so I'm wondering if he was mistakenly listed under a step-father's surname in the 1860 and 1870 censuses. Do any Pike Co. researchers out there recognize this Roxanne Crumpler or William Taunton? I'd love to find out what happened to them after the 1850 census entry. Michelle mtaunton@mindspring.com
