Do you have any other info on Stephen Gardner, such as his parent's names, sibling's, etc.? I am researching the Gardner family from that area. There were several Gardner families who migrated from South Carolina to Montgomery County at the same time and it is hard to put them in their correct families. I have run across Stephen D. Gardner a lot in my research and have his date of death as 1/15/1862. I do not know whether he is connected to my Gardners or not. 1860 Montgomery County, Alabama Census: Household 754: Stephen D. Gardner, 27, farmer, $1,000, $300, AL Penni Gardner, 25, AL Lucinda Speaks, 26, AL Next door to them in Household 755: Carolina Speaks, 50, $100, SC Sophronia Speaks, 18, AL They also lived next door to this family, so perhaps Nancy is Stephen's mother: Household 753: Nancy Gardner, 55, farmer, $1,000, $300, SC E. M. Gardner, 25, f, $247, AL Rebecca Adams, 4 What is really weird, though, is another Gardner family in this Census: Household 657: L. D. Gardner, 28, farmer, $800, AL Pinia Gardner, 21, AL James Gardner, 2, AL Lucinda Speaks, 23, AL The L. could certainly be a typo for an S., but why would this family be listed twice on the same Census with different ages, etc.? I have some of the Speaks family showing up again in 1880: Bernice Gardner, head, 42, AL, farmer, father born in AL, mother born in SC Henry J. G. Gardner, son, 19, farmer, father born in AL, mother born in SC Stephen R. Gardner, son, 17, AL Lucinda Speeks, sister, 44, AL, keeping house, parents born in SC Caroline Speeks, other, 70, SC, parents born in SC This is the family of my ggg grandfather, Stephen Gardner, 1850 Montgomery County Census: Stephen Gardner, 45, famrer, SC Elizabeth Gardner, 45, SC Catherine E. Gardner, 17 Francis I. Gardner, 14 Alpha Gardner, 12 Susan B. Gardner, 10 Enos M. Gardner, 8 John H. Gardner, 6, AL Wesley Morris, 21, farmer, son-in-law D. Hensley, 18, daughter, wife of Wesley James D. (or M.) Gardner, 11 mos. I hope any of this info is of help to you - look forward to hearing from you.
