Confederate Rest is FOR SALE by the American Legion Post 199 in Fairhope, Alabama. The property comprises between 2.5 to 4 acres of land located in the Lakewood Subdivision at Point Clear (near the Grand Hotel). Land in that subdivision, if any could be found, would sell in the neighborhood of $300,000-$500,000 per acre. Confederate Rest Cemetery was donated for the burial of Confederate soldiers by Colonel Ketchum, CSA in 1863. New evidence suggests approximately 575 Confederates are buried in at least 3 long trenches "stacked like cord wood." Most died after being moved from Vicksburg to the Confederate Hospital located at Point Clear. There are supposedly 2 large burial plots containing the body parts of Confederate amputees. Confederate Rest has been maintained and honored by several groups since Colonel Ketchum's original donation in 1863. The Eastern Shore Memorial Society donated/sold it to the American Legion in the 1960s as they no longer could maintain it. **************** > EASTERN SHORE POST 199 > AMERICAN LEGION June 2, 2006 > > > Dear Smith; > > First, let me thank you for your interest in our Confederate Rest > Cemetery. > Also, we appreciate your kind words regarding our fallen Comrade, the > irreplaceable Claude Arnold, as well. > > As to a possible transfer or sale of the Cemetery property, that has been > properly addressed in accordance with established Legion protocols. > Serious > and bonafide offers will be considered based on their merits through Mr. > Larry Hipsch. > > We appreciate your efforts to date, and intend, for the mean time, to > allow > your group's continued use of the property for ceremonial purposes.
