Hi, I've done more census research on other people than I have my own family, may I offer some suggestions on that 1860 census -- it is a little early for the men to be off at war and the women boarding up together, but the Rough and Ready Pioneers of Pike Co. did organize before they were mustered into Co. E of the 1st Alabama in Feb. 1861. Another explanation is a rash of deaths among the Jones men (does the 1860 AL census have death schedules?) -- E.L. Jones could be a sister-in-law and M Jones, her daughter-in-law and the mother of the two little girls. E.L. could also be Rutha's step-mother-in-law (a second, third, or more) wife to Joseph's father. Joseph is at least 9 years younger than Rutha. Also it was not unusual for sisters to marry brothers -- 5 couples like that in my grandfather's family -- so E.L. could be a younger sister and SIL of Rutha. Probably more brick walls, but at least lateral lines that might be checked and do you know about any of the Jones men's War service. It would be a little odd that Isham, at 20, was not with them -- though there could be a number of explanations for that. It is also just plain true that no census records are complete and if people weren't at home, they usually weren't counted and lots of people were just plain missed. My grandfather is not in the 1930 index; however, my grandmother is and low and behold there is my gf as head of household. You'd think they'd get it right by then!! Per old family letters from Isham to his mother and sister, Martha, I know that Susan is still alive well into the late 1870's and still living in the Butler County area, or surrounding counties. There is no mention of Malissa in these letters. I have a receipt dated 1866 for $300 paid to a James Golden by a Joel Carter on behalf of Susan Williams, Martha Rainer and Malisey Jones. I am assuming Susan and Malisey are Martha's sisters. If that is the case, then Susan Jones married a "Williams." In another letter from a G.W. Simmons written in 1866 from Prattville, Alabama to "his aunt" he also mentions his "cousin Malisey." He also mentions Gracey, Betty and Mary. I am hoping someone will recognize some of these names and will help me make a connection to which Jones family my 3rd great grandfather is from and perhaps who were his wife's family. Claudia, I have not seen the Pike Co. Heritage book. I do have the latest Bullock Co. book. William and Nancy Winfield Pruitt Boswell were my GGG-GP's. They both died in 1873 and were buried on their property. Unfortunately their graves have been lost over time. Their children were: Elizabeth Ann who married Benjamin Nollie Horn; James William who married Willie Placide Harris; Virginia Caroline who married James Albert Eidson; Louisiana Winfield who married William Dixon Horn; Susan Bourland who married James Thomas Brown; Thomas Moses who married Mary Elizabeth Terry (my GG-GP's). I don't know much about my father's side of the family,but my I've traced my mother's side back a little. my mother's father was andrew erastus hickman. her mother was molly sephronia (sic) head. we are related to the richardsons and the williamsons I think by marriage. other than that, I don't know much else. It would be good to hear from you. I do know that some of my father's family moved to texas probably around the early 1900s and I believe they settled near beaumont, though I am not really sure about this. John Wood from GA who moved into Pike Co. and was well known for his preaching and assistance in founding churches, he apparently married a "Charlotte/Susan" Evans, the mother of Augustus Evans and 5 other children and later Mariah Pinckard, a widow with children (Jane Melmoth Pinckard) and they had 8 children together -- this is from family papers, internet research, the Heritage Book, and most of all the extraordinary generosity and graciousness of the members of this Board. I have not been to Pike Co. or to GA to personally get into the juicy primary stuff, such research being a great pleasure to me. His son, Augustus Evans Wood, and his step-daughter, Jane Melmoth Pinckard, (raised as brother and sister) married and had John Henry; Elizabeth "Lizzie" A.; James Pinckard "Pink" and later "Major;" William A(shley) who was killed in the Battle of Franklin, 1864; McQuinn "Coose" A(ugustus); Benajah/Benejah W(ilkes); Edwin Hervey; Susan "Ida" M.; and Francis "Frank" (Staughton/Staunton) "Peleg". It is documented that John H., James P. and William A. served in the Civil War. However, I have a letter from John H. from the field outside Atlanta, 1864, in which he mentions having seen several "home" people including "Pink," "Coose," and "Bid." Their father, Augustus Evans (d. 1865), joined the home guards toward the end of the War and I believe the reference to Coose clearly indicates McQuinn Augustus also served. He was 16 years old in 1864, well of an age to have joined his brothers in service. I have not identified "Bid," but I believe he may have been William Ashley. Although it could as well have been Benajah Wilkes, 14 in 1864. I am, of course, assuming that his mention of these three nicknames, two known to be his brothers, indicates the third is as well. In 1861, John Henry was 20 and James Pinckard was 16, it is known that they both enlisted immediately upon the call for troops in AL and, I understand, that the Rough and Ready Pioneers of Pike County, a volunteer corps formed prior to the official call for troops, had its base at the old Wood Homestead. I have evidence that John, Lizzie, Major, Benajah, Ida, and Frank married and all I believe had issue. I do not have information on whether Coose or Edwin Hervey married, I do not believe that they did. Should our lines connect, I will be happy to share the information I have and compare notes (I am especially interested in photos). However, I am stretched to the breaking point with a number of responsibilities and cannot, absolutely cannot get into family research at this time -- I feel very guilty writing this now, I should be making "passports" for 35 of our midweek church kids!!
