All rights reserved. http://www.rootsweb.com/~usgenweb/copyright.htm http://www.rootsweb.com/~usgenweb/al/alfiles.htm ************************************************ File contributed for use in USGenWeb Archives by: Pamala Celeste Nolan pamala@elmore.rr.com April 18, 2007, 8:54 pm Midland City Clipper, March 17, 1892 Death of MR. THOMAS JACKSON Ariosto, ALA, Mar. 16, 1892 Our community was moved as it was never moved before on last Thursday night by the news that Mr. Thomas Jackson, one of the firm of Jackson Bros. was drowned. He and some more boys had went down to Munns Mill on Pea River for the purpose of seining and while far out in the river they struck a place where the water was deep and very swift and Thomas, though an excellent swimmer, failed to succeed in getting out and Mr. Tom Holder came very near drowning. Every effort was made to recover the body, but all failed until Sunday about 11 o’clock a.m. when he was found 300 yards from the fatal spot. His remains were interred at Mount Zion church on Monday at 11 o’clock in the presence of a large crowd of relatives and friends. The writer was on the most intimate terms with the deceased as well as his teacher. Only a few days ago he was in school, a perfect specimen of health and manhood. He was 22 years of age, and was industrious and prosperous. Oh, God! How infinite are thy ways. Grieve not gentle mother and sorrowing father, mourn not the loss of thy loved one, you will some day meet him in that heaven where you will be freed from sorrow and care. Where in the midst of angels he will bid welcome father, mother, brothers, and sisters. Sin never will cause his feet to roam in that bright world so pure and fair. And when our father calls you home you will meeting your darling Tommie there. J.A. Lightfoot Additional Comments: Ariosto was a town near Charlton in Dale County, AL. In 1904 the names were combined to form Ariton. Tommy was born in Pike County, AL on 01/18/1870 and died on 03/10/1892. He is buried at Mt. Zion Baptist Church cemetery in Coffee County, AL next to his mother, Sarah Ann Narramore Jackson. His father, John Calhoun Jackson, is buried in Cool Springs Baptist Church cemetery in Coffee County, AL. Tommy’s headstone reads: Son of J.C. and S.A. Jackson, It was hard to give thee up, But thy will, O God, be done. 3. Pardon ... I forgot to put the url to the page on my site that has the survey of Carter Cemetery and the headstone of Israel Alison. http://www.katscelticroots.com/carter.htm ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ about six months ago my husband and I went to Carter Cemetery which is in Pike (barely! but still) we had finished photographing the headstones for a complete photographic survey when I noticed a headstone outside of the cemetery fence. My husband went around the fencing through the undergrowth and got a picture of the stone. This stone does not appear on the 1971 survey of the cemetery which is the only one I've seen printed anywhere. The headstone states: Israel Alison Born at the Dickson Place near Orion Aug. 2, 1888 Died Feb. 7, 1907 I'm curious if anyone on the list knows anything about the "Dickson Place" or an Alison family. A search of the 1900 Alabama census turned up nothing on Israel Alison. 1. [ALPIKE] Greetings
    2. Katherine Reece
    3. Hello, I just joined the Pike Co list. In Pike, I mostly research the Barnett family. I've been extremely lucky on this line as a remote cousin did a lot of work in the 1930's and 1940's and compiled his information into booklets that he had printed and distributed to the family. After I expressed an interest in genealogy as a young woman in the 1970's my grandmother gave the booklets to me. I've scanned them into pdf and they're available on my website at this url: http://www.katscelticroots.com/records.htm (at the bottom). Yes its primarily about the Barnett family, but other families did marry in of course. I'm pretty satisfied with my Barnett Pike Co research, but, about six months ago my husband and I went to Carter Cemetery which is in Pike (barely! but still) we had finished photographing the headstones for a complete photographic survey when I noticed a headstone outside of the cemetery fence. My husband went around the fencing through the undergrowth and got a picture of the stone.
