I'll add my three cheers for the genealogy section there as well.... my husband and I went there a couple of years back to research my Barnett and Berrey families. After we got there he was sorry he hadn't brought his research book to work with as well as they had so much from Kentucky and Ohio where his family is from.. as well as a goodly collection of books on immigration. If you do not live nearby, you should also check at the LDS Library in your area. They have microfilmed a great deal of Pike records and you can order in the film and view them at their facilities. I, too, think the Troy Public Library's genealogy section has the best staff! Several years ago, I was on crutches and had a cast on my foot. When I arrived upstairs in the genealogy department and they saw that I was a little unable to get around easily, they sat me in a chair and were all over the place bringing me books to my table. They could not have been more helpful!!! I have been other years when I was able to move around and they are still just wonderful! I don't think you will find a more helpful group anywhere. Here's what I know. He was born 3/12/1802 in what became Marion District, S.C. He moved with the rest of the family to Clarendon about 1810 and to Pike County circa 1831. Now the family legend ... in 1833 he ran away with Sara Mims to the Arkansas frontier, because she was of a "moorish jewish" family. She died two years later, leaving the daughter Suzanna. R.D. returned to Pike Co. and married Sarah Whittington. Richard had at least one sibling, a brother Hiram, who moved to Mississippi about the same time. I think the cousin marriage story makes good sense too. My father didn't know about the second marriage and thought we had "jewish" blood. We are descended from Sarah Whittington's only surviving son, John Andrew Sessions. Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. I will make a trip there to try to find who the husband was of my Rhoda Mathis (Mathews), if there might be anything that would help. She shows up on the 1830 census as a widow with two small boys and subsequent census images have conflicting data on where she was born, her age, etc. She and her son and his family moved from Pike in 1850 to Attala County, MS. Her son was Wiley Mathis (Matthews, Mathews?) His wife was Sarah (Sary) Myers. Thank you all for all your help on this board.
