Hi, The next "bulletin" or book of the Pike Co. Hist. & Gen. Society will, hopefully, be published this month, October, and mailed out early in November. It will go out free of charge to all current members of the PCH&GS. This book consists of abstracts of General Estates Records from the Probate Office of the Pike County Courthouse covering the period 1823 to 1880 approximately. There are a few records extending to 1900. There are 25 of the General Estates books in the courthouse and we published a 1st book of abstracts, of Books 1-12, & a 2nd book of abstracts, of Books 13-19, both in 1998, and now we're publishing the final book of abstracts, of Books 20-25. These 3 books of abstracts are loaded with genealogical information. They name heirs of deceased people, give section, township and range info about their real estate, and give names and any other info available about their slaves. Sometimes there are two or three lists of heirs, as sometimes it took several years for an estate to be settled and meanwhile heirs died, moved, had children of their own, etc. The 1st book of abstracts sells for $25 and the 2nd book for $20. They may be ordered from Karen Bullard, Treasurer of the PCH&GS. Again, the present book will go out free of additional charge to all people who paid the $13 membership dues earlier this year. Anyone wanting to pay dues at this time to receive the present publication might like to contact Karen Bullard at: Karen@publiclibrary.troy.al.us. I think you would receive only this publication if you pay dues now and would have to pay again next year to receive next year's publications, but, still, you would be getting the book a bit cheaper than if you ordered it later. If you want to mail payment to Karen now, her address is Karen Bullard, 4041 Co. Rd. 59, Troy, AL 36079. Dorothy Ann Folmar Pike Co., AL
Hi, I don't know what Pike Tombs Book Lee Anne has offered to do look-ups from but since several people have asked how to obtain and buy such a book, I would like to say that the Pike County Historical and Genealogical Society has published a Tombs Book for Pike Co., AL. In fact, it has published two tombs books -- one is the main book and the second an update and supplement to the first. A man named E. H. Hayes worked hard years ago getting up inscriptions from south Alabama tombs and the first publication of his Pike County, Alabama Tomb Records was in 1973 in "The Alabama Historical Quarterly, Vol. XXXV 1973 Nos. 1, 2, 3, 4, Published by the Alabama State Dept. of Archives & History." In 1990 the Pike County Historical & Genealogical Society obtained permission from the State Dept. of Archives & History to republish this book, and we have been reprinting and selling it ever since. It is one of our best sellers. In 1996 the Pike County Historical & Genealogical Society! (PCH&GS) compiled a supplement to the original Tombs Book, updating it and adding tomb inscriptions which had been discovered since the first book was written and also adding all unmarked graves of which we could learn. To order the main Tombs Book, which we call Pike County Tombs Book Volume I, or to order the supplement, which we call Pike County Tombs Book Volume II, you may write to Karen Bullard, 4041 Co. Rd. 59, Troy, Al 36079. She and Mrs. Clara Miller are Treasurers of the PCH&GS and in charge of distributing its publications. Karen is also the main genealogy hostess at the Troy Public Library. (She has been promoted and I don't remember her actual current title). Her e-mail address at the library is karen@publiclibrary.troy.al.us. I don't know the price of the main Tombs Book, Vol. I, but Karen can tell you or I can find out for you. The price of Vol. II is $25 and the first book is probably the same. John and Jan Radford have graciously made an excellent web site for the PCH&GS, which lists most of our publications: http://www.intersurf.com/~johnjanr/hsp.htm I don't think that site has our main Tombs book listed, since we did not compile it, merely obtained permission to republish and sell it, but it does contain the supplementary Tombs Book. For further information, please contact Karen Bullard at the e-mail address above or contact me and I will obtain information for you. Dorothy Ann Folmar Pike Co., AL
