    3. Posted on: Pike County, Al Query Forum Reply Here: http://cgi.rootsweb.com/~genbbs/genbbs.cgi/USA/Al/Pike/1648 Surname: Reeves ------------------------- I am from Pike County and am related to the Reeves family. I believe that my father and Mr. Ben Reeves were first cousins. My grandfather Mr. Howell Leverette also worked in the Pike County Sheriffs Dept. That would have been somewhere around the 1930's. I have never heard of Plesant Nichols, but I will ask some of my family. I was born in 1970 so I really do not remember a lot of the Reeves. I do remember Mr. Ben Reeves. His wife is still living in Troy. I also am familiar with the Johnson and Hale trial. I have a copy of the court transcripts. At the time of that trial I believe Mr. Sam Reeves was the Sheriff. His wife Mrs. Pearl Reeves was also Sheriff at one time. She was one of the first women Sheriffs in Alabama. I am sorry that I am not more help, but I will try and ask others in my family about Mr. Plez Nichols. Matt Leverette

I know that he served for several years as a jailer for the Pike County Sheriffs Dept., during the terms of the Carroll and Reeves families. Plez was the son of Kinchen Ellis Nichols and Martha Carroll-Nichols. She was the sister of Marion Carroll who was the Sheriff, starting in 1893. I am also aware of the murder trial of Johnson and Hale. I know that Plez ran for Sheriff when his half-brother, Ben Reeves, decided not to run in the early 1930s. Did he become Sheriff and can anyone share any info on these people? I would appreciate any help that I can get. 1. [ALPIKE] Update, Pike Heritage Book
    2. Dorothy Ann Folmar
    3. To all, The Pike County Heritage Book Committee is working almost daily, and to some extent nightly, too, again proof-reading the Pike Heritage Book. Committee members proof-read the book once before turning it over to Heritage Publishing. Now Heritage Publishing is sending their work back, so much at a time, to us to proof-read again. I've been delayed in helping the committee with this second proof-reading, due to surgery, but now that I am helping, I have to say that the part I've proof-read so far has been relatively free of errors and the photos, for the most part, are quite good. In short, it appears to me (and I'm notoriously known, I think, as a perfectionist) that the book is going to turn out quite well! The committee has been trying despearately to get the proof-reading done in time for Heritage Publishing to have the books ready for distribution before Christmas, as we are well aware that some people want to use these books as Christmas presents. Neither I nor anyone else on the Committee can promise to have the books ready and distributed in time for people to use them as Christmas girfts. I'm very sorry, but we just can't make that promise. We are completely dependent on Heritage Publishing at this point. They have promised us that the books WILL be ready before Christmas, but we really have to wait and see. I can only say that the Pike County Heritage Book Committee has done, and is doing, its utmost to see that the books get out to purchasers well before Christmas. I want to add that all of us on the Committee are absolutely awed and humbled by the responses we got for contributions to this book. Many people from Texas and other states contributed information about their Pike ancestors. It is fascinating to read all these wonderful stories and to look at all the photos sent in. ...We might already have the book ready for distribution if it had been the size Heritage Publishing projected -- but we received many more stories and photos than they expected, so the book is larger, and it therefore is requiring more time to publish. I will keep this list updated on the Book and if you have any questions, please let me know. Dorothy Ann Folmar Pike Co., AL

Dickey at the National Archives as Private, Company A, 39th Alabama Infantry Regiment. He didn’t survive very long after joining. The 39th Artillery was formed 10 March 1862 and he died approximately six months later based on the date Narcissa Ann Wolfe Dickey was appointed administratrix of his estate. From March to April 1862, he learned how to be an infantryman. They were formally accepted into the service of the Confederate States on 1 April 1982. His first paycheck was 10 May 1862 for the period 10 March to 10 May 1862 for $11.00 per month, a total of $22.00. Within a few days after being paid, they were loaded onto railcars and transported toward Corinth, MS. While enroute they were told to disimbark at Tupelo, MS where they met and joined veterans of the recent Battle of Shiloh, Tennesse whose stories about the battle shook up a lot of the new soldiers. Near the end of May, the brigade had settled into camp a few miles north of Tupelo, at the town of Saltilla, MS where they were issued their firearms and practiced loading and firing them. On 29 May 1862, Company A reported only 43 men and 1 lieutenant present for duty. By 30 June 1862, the company was nearly back to strenth with 81 but Captain Joseph C. Clayton noted in his journal that the company had suffered much from sickness and exposure. On 28 August 1862, they began a march through the mountains northward to Kentucky. They reached Munfordswille, KY, surrounded the city in the evening the the next morning, the federals within the town surrendered. They continued on a march into the heart of Kentucky, reaching Hodgenville and Bardstown in October 1862. They witnessed an inauguration of the Conferate governor of Kentucy at Frankfort. The inauguraton festivities were short lived as a federal army reached them at Perryville on 7 October 1862 and the Battle of Perryville was fought. It is doubtful if Thomas S. Dickey fought in the battle because his wife was appointed administratrix of his extate on 4 October 1862 which after the date the battle is officially recorded as occurring. He may have died of illness and exposure sometime during the march. (Information extracted from Civil War Website http://www.texramp.net/~meowen/kentucky.htm Abstract of Wills Book A & B Thomas S. He certainly didn't survive long >From 10 March 1862 when the 39th Artillery was formed until just before October 1962 when his wife was appointed administrix of his estate. About 6 months. He must have died of illness because from March to April 1862 he learned how to be an infantryman; first paycheck was 10 May 1862. Then they were loaded onto railcars and transported by railroad toward Corinth, MS but changed enroute to Tupelo and jointed other seasoned veterans of Shiloh. Didn't even receive their firearms until the end of May. While encamped at Tupillo, MS, many men became sick. On 28 August they began a march through the mountains northward to Kentucky. They took Munfordswville, KY, stayed there a few days and continued on a march into the heart in Kentucky and watched the inauguration of the Confederate governor of Kentucky, at Frankfort. On the next day (5 October 1862) the Battle of Perryville was fought. Since his wife was appointed administratrix on 19 October 1862, he possibly could have fought and died in the Battle of Perryville, but if so, she received the news rather rapidly of her husband's death. It's possible but more likely he died before the battle.

    3. Posted on: Pike County, Al Query Forum Reply Here: http://cgi.rootsweb.com/~genbbs/genbbs.cgi/USA/Al/Pike/1635 Surname: WOLFE, DICKEY, DANIEL ------------------------- Thanks to the people who are doing lookups. One of the Wolfe Pack ran across a posting in this Forum that applied to the Wolfe Lineage that we've been working on. We have other family information if anyone is interested. It provided information about the marriage, his will (of sorts), census information and that a Thomas Dickey has served in the 39th Infantry, CSA, Pike County, AL. Does anyone know for sure that the Thomas Dickey who served in the 39th Infantry is the same Thomas S. Dickey who married Narcissa Ann Wolfe? He apparently died before 4 October 1862 when his wife was appointed administratrix of the settlement of his estate. The 39th Infantry was formed in May 1862 and what with training and moving around the 39th didn't have any formal battles(and very bloody battles resulting in great loss of life)until after the appointment of his wife to handle his estate. Of course he could have died from sickness and not during any battle(s). Couldn't find a website with rosters of the general troops. Some information on the officers and staff which does not include his name. And we would be interested in knowing what happened to Narcissa Ann Wolfe Dickey and her children when the personal property of the estate was sold to relatives to pay off debts. Did she remarry or migrate elsewhere? She isn't shown on any later census information which was also posted. We would appreciate any additional information that anyone might have.
