Sent the following to the NEW Barbour County, AL list. Thought I would also forward it to the Pike County, AL list since some of the folks ended up in Pike County, AL. Lyn McIntosh-Sherwood Hello All! First of all, it's great to see a new Barbour County, AL list that will respect its subscribers and allow folks to help one another in their research without bias in one form or another. I am looking forward to being on this list and helping in any way that I can. I have Family Tree Maker CD's and I will certainly extend any assistance that I can to others on this list. My family research in Barbour County, AL includes the following families: BAKER, BLACK, BLAYLOCK, DEESE, HAGLER, HENDERSON, LINDSAY, REAVES, SHEPHERD, and VAUGHN. These are all families that married into my JOHNSON Clan. Phillip JOHNSON, b. June 21, 1804, Union County, N.C., (father Phillip JOHNSON), d. May 22, 1888 in Barbour County, AL, buried Ramah Cemetery. First Wife - Unknown. Children: a.. Charity, b. 1827, m. SHEPHERD b.. John, b. 1830 c.. Luison, b. 1833 d.. Judge, b. 1836, m. Mary A., child: Alexander e.. Martha, b. 1841 f.. Elmyra, b. 1844 I have very little information about this first family. They were grown and raised by the time that Phillip married my great-great-grandmother Mary Jane. Although I do understand that they did help out with the "second batch" of kids as Phillip wasn't around very much. Second Wife - Mary Jane PASSMORE, b. Feb. 14, 1838/1840, Thomaston, Upson County, GA (parents PASSMORE and Anna THIGPEN PASSMORE DEESE), d. November 12, 1923, Phoenix City, AL, b. Sandfield Cemetery, Zebulon Baptist Church, Pike County, AL. Children (all born in Barbour County, AL): a.. Timothy Green, b. September 27, 1860, d. 1934, m. Della (Delia) HAGLER (children: Millie and Margaret - both married REAVES) b.. Anna Texas, b. March 11, 1862, m. Andrew C. BLACK (one child Joseph Daniel, b. 2/1890), m. (2) John Wesley BLAYLOCK (no children), d. August 31, 1953, Atlanta, Fulton County, GA, Home for Confederate Widows c.. William Washington, b. February 5, 1864, m. Cynthia Jane DEESE, (children: Nancy Jane, Mary, William Alexander, Milton Philip, Ella Mae, Celia Ann, Jesse James, and Josie Ethel) d. February 20, 1937, Cottonwood, AL, b. Clayton Missionary Baptist Cemetery, Cottonwood, AL. d.. Thomas Jefferson, b. December 22, 1865, m. Martha Jane HENDERSON (child Charlie b. 1889), d. March 31, 1899, (hung for murder), Troy, Pike County, AL, buried Ramah Primitive Baptist Church, Josie, Pike County, AL e.. Abigail "Abbie G.", b. December 21, 1867, m. Henry Penn Taylor MATHEWS (children: Lena, Lydia, Willie Bean, Henry Taylor), d. November 14, 1923 in Barbour County, AL - Lydia m. William NACE their child Virginia Enlowaine was my mother. Lydia's first marriage was to a BAKER, they had a daughter Mary Jane. f.. Josephas, b. March 20, 1869, m. Arminthy LINDSEY (children: Bud, Abe, and Coot), d. ? g.. Tannie, b. February 8, 1871 - believe she died in infancy h.. General Taylor, b. March 29, 1872, m. Ellen Y. VAUGHN (children: Walter, Henry, Bessie, Ruby, John Ben, Felton, and Polly) I am particularly interested in locating descendants of the SHEPHERD family so that I might possibly discover some additional information on Phillip and his first wife as well as his parents. I have heard that SHEPHERD was a Sheriff. Also, Mary Jane PASSMORE JOHNSON's mother, Anna THIGPEN PASSMORE DEESE, married Isham DEESE (died in the Civil War of measels) in Troup County, GA in 1838. They moved to Barbour County, AL where they had the following children: Milton, Riley, Sid, Mack, John, and Fanny. Also hoping to find descendents of this family so that we might share photographs and information. Thank you all for your time. Inverness was at one time known as Thomas Station or Thomasville. When the place name change took place, I don't know. Inverness was in Pike Co., AL until about 1866 and is now in Bullock Co., AL. It is more of a community or village than a town. It is in that part of Bullock Co. known as "Scotland", due to the many Scots that settled there. There is a James THOMAS, age 68, born in NC and wife Mary, age 69, born in NC listed in the 1850 Pike Co., Census. The BLM/GLO web site indicates that a James THOMAS had quite a few land transactions in the 1830s and 1840s.
Is there anyone that can tell me where I might find information on the town of Iverness? Does it still exist? Someone shared with me that Iverness was originally called Thomasville and that it was renaimed between 1870-1880. This area was supposedly first settled by some Thomas and Sellers Families. I was told that my 4th ggrandfather James Thomas purchased 1500+ acres in this area while still living in SC, from 1835-ca. 1837, and then moved on to this land in AL along with several of his grown children, where they farmed cotton. I would like to know more and be able to verify this information with documentation. Thanks In Advance. Carrie

Kenny, Look at the panorama of Troy. When you get to the point that you see a small white monument (I think it was originally a fountain.) there is a two story yellowish building in the background. Just to the left is a much smaller building with a reddish awning; that is the building that housed "Miss Addie's" bookstore. I never really new the name of the business; it was always referred to as "Miss Addie's". By the way the panorama was taken fairly recently. If I run across an old photo of Court Square, I will forward a scan.
