Jeff had a brother named Joseph Alston Phillips who would be our Great-Uncle." >From Pike County Alabama Tomb Records (1972) compiled by the Pike Co. PRINCE on 30 Dec 1850. I wonder if Tredway and Mary might not really be PRINCE's rather than PHILIPS--perhaps Averilla Adeline's father and sister. None of the other PHILLIPS in this family are known to have come from SC] There is a great deal of information available on this family in the publications of the Pike Co. Historical Society, including "Records Pertaining to Some Early Pike Countians" (vol. XXXIV, nos. 3&4), and the "Abstracts from General Estates Books (vols. XXXVII and XXXIX). These are available for purchase from the PCHS. John PHILLIPS died in 1867, leaving his widow Averilla Adaline (PRINCE) PHILLIPS to administer his estate. Heirs listed were his widow, and children James Madison, Francis Marion, Andrew Jackson, John Walton, Joseph Alston, Jefferson Davis, Sarah "Sallie" Josephine, and Mary Adaline (first two under 21, and last six under 14). Land in the estate (240 acres) lay in Sections 7, 28, 31, and 33, all in Township 10, Range 20 (near Goodhope Church). John's mother Mary PHILLIPS (of whose estate he was the administrator) was born ca 1791 in GA. She may have been the widow of James PHILLIPS--one James PHILLIPS married Mary HARRIS on 3 Dec 1804 in Oglethorpe Co., GA, but I have no proof that this was the Mary who later appears in Pike Co., AL. Mary's Pike Co. estate (she died ca 1862) reveals her children to have been Zachariah PHILLIPS, John PHILLIPS, Sarah PHILLIPS JARMON, Aaron PHILLIPS, Elijah G. PHILLIPS, Nancy PHILLIPS TILLERY, Mary PHILLIPS PRINCE, William PHILLIPS, Elizabeth PHILLIPS RYALS, and James PHILLIPS. I hope this helps--I'm not related to this family, but have collected data on it for a friend in Union Springs who descends from Alva TILLERY, son of Nancy (TILLERY) PHILLIPS and grandson of Mary PHILLIPS who died ca 1862. 3. Posted on: Pike County, Al Query Forum Reply Here: http://genconnect.rootsweb.com/gc/USA/Al/Pike/11928 Surname: Brown, Holmes, Phillips ------------------------- I am researching Brown, Holmes, Phillips connections on my mother's side. They all lived in Alabama. The Brown's and Holmes were in Coffee county and the Phillips from the Pike County area, around Good Hope and Goshen. Earnest B. Brown was my great-grandfather. Three of his children were: Jay, Fanny, and my grandmother, Myrtle. Myrtle married a Holmes first and had 1 son - Forrest Holmes. She later married my grandfather, Jefferson Davis Phillips and had two children, Foy and Florene Phillips. I think mother told us that our Grandfather Jeff worked in a country store near Good Hope in the early 1900's, maybe 1916-1920. He also farmed in that community. Some neighbors of theirs were the O.D.King family, Folmars. Jeff had a brother named Joseph Alston Phillips who would be our Great-Uncle. If anyone knows of this family and can share pictures or information, I would really appreciate it. I haven't found much about myrtle's Brown-Holmes' family - and don't know where Jeff Phillips, our grandfather was buried; but, I think it is Good Hope Baptist Church cemetery. Thanks for any help you can give me.

Posted on: Pike County, Al Query Forum Reply Here: http://cgi.rootsweb.com/~genbbs/genbbs.cgi/USA/Al/Pike/11915 Surname: Jeffcoat ------------------------- Annette, I know about the Motes graves in the field that are named in the Pike Co., AL Cemetery Book 2. I don't know if you are interested in the graves for Motes or Jeffcoat but when I was last in Pike County, I talked with Kathlyn Folmar, she is near the area where the graves are and she called 3 people in the area to find out more about the graves. All agreed the place the graves are was once called something other than Motes Grave Yard. (I'm at work and don't know what the name was just now.) But they all assured her NO JEFFCOATs were ever buried in that grave yard. I was disappointed for I thought I had at last found the grave yard in my search. If you get more information on this or another possible location on the Motes Grave Yard, I would greatly appreciate the information too. Thanks Pat
