William Henry died during Reconstruction; during this time very few could afford to erect a permanent gravestone. 2. Hello group. I have a question about cemeteries. If a person died 1834 in Pike County could he have been buried on his own land. Was it legal then? My James and Jackson Courson are not in the cemetery books that I know of. Thanks Nina

    3. Just wanted to thank all you folks who responded to my query regarding the availability of Pike Co.cemetery record listings. For the record, just in case anyone happens to know anything about this person and/or family, the primary person I am looking for is my ggg grandfather: WILLIAM HENRY SANDERS, born 4/10/1776 The information I have is that he died in 1872, in, or around, China Grove, and is buried there. On the 1870 Pike Co. census, he was listed as living with one of his sons, ALLEN WIGGINS SANDERS, born 12/30/1821, who might also be buried in that same area. It is possible there might be other SANDERS of this family there, too?? Thanks again, Winston Sanders

    2. Gosh, you would think we were related somehow. I don't know if you are familiar with Fort Drum, but it is just a bump in the road these days. It used to be much larger. Phelps is my maiden name and consequently, my paternal greatgrandmother was born in Fort Drum in 1857. I will keep your message and if I run across any information, I will let you know. (I did check the Okeechobee Co. phone book and there are five Phelpses listed.) If you would like their addresses, let me know. Closest large county to Okeechobee is St. Lucie Co.

There is a listing in Bullock County but it is incomplete and a kind soul looked it up and I have all the family that were buried there. _________________________________________________________________ Get your FREE download of MSN Explorer at http://explorer.msn.com/intl.asp

    3. Pike County is one of the few counties in Alabama that has complete published records of all marked graves in the County. Unfortunately this only encompasses those cemeteries which are predominantly Caucasian. The two volumes of the tomb records are available from the Pike County Historical and Genealogical Society. A complete listing of all of their publications is at the Website's URL which is in my signature block below. If you are a serious researcher of former residents of Pike County, Alabama, the census, marriage, court, tomb, etc. records are invaluable. Anyone needing lookups should make their needs known and some kind soul will probably do a few lookups for you. Provide all the information that you can on the individual - complete name and dates of birth and death, if possible. I don't mind doing a lookup, but I personally don't have time to go through 30 or 40 SESSIONS trying to second-guess the one that you want. WHO ARE YOU LOOKING FOR? 1. Re: [AL-PIKE] CEMETERY RECORDS
    2. Winston Regarding cemeteries in the China Grove area, according to the Historical Atlas of Alabama Volume 2, there are three in the general area. The town itself is in the northernmost part of the county, not far from Stills Crossroads. It was settled around 1821 and had a PO from 1857-1905. China Grove Cemetery AKA Concord Cemetery, is adjacent to the Concord Church. It contains about 225 graves and is still in use. New Mount Zion Cemetery is located next to New Mount Zion Church. Dennis Cemetery is a small family cemetery with five graves, last internment in 1919. Hope this helps! Craig in the Silicon Valley

    3. Thanks for the message/inquiry, Karen. I've been to the Pike Co. AL GenWeb site and found nothing on cemeteries - and virtually nothing in libraries. I have a ggg grandfather who reportedly died, and is buried in the China Grove area. I'll "second" Karen's query - does anybody out there know anything about China Grove, if it still exists - and any listing on cemeteries in that area?
