He was born in Columbus County, North Carolina, March 30, 1808, and came from his native state to Montgomery county in 1831, where he lived till 1834. He then came to Pike County and made a good useful citizen the balance of his days. He was devoted to the tenants of the Baptist church, being a member when the division occurred. He went with the Missionary side. He was a soldier in capt. Stringer's company in 1836 fighting the Indians, and since 1892 has been a beneficiary of the pension act. Joel Brunson and David Stringer are now the only survivors of that company. He leaves nine children and an aged widow, seventeen grand children and nine great grand children. H has always been a hard working and industrious man, honest and upright. He has ever been a democrat as true as ever carried the blood of democracy. Uncle "Cain", as he was familiarly called, helped to erect the first house at Centerville, now Troy, in 1835. He helped to build the jail house, built of logs, in 1839. Indeed he was one of the oldest land marks of this country. Additional Comments: Elkanah was my great-great grandfather. He is buried in a family cemetery that can no longer be located on Elm Street Road in Pike County, AL. From other records I have learned that he also help build the Buelah Primitive Baptist Church in Troy, AL.
