" My Wood family came from Pike County and I would truly love to see what you have on the Wood family" Dear Willie from CA, Who are your Wood people -- the farthest back I have is Rev. John Wood from GA who moved into Pike Co. and was well known for his preaching and assistance in founding churches, he apparently married a "Charlotte/Susan" Evans, the mother of Augustus Evans and 5 other children and later Mariah Pinckard, a widow with children (Jane Melmoth Pinckard) and they had 8 children together -- this is from family papers, internet research, the Heritage Book, and most of all the extraordinary generosity and graciousness of the members of this Board. I have not been to Pike Co. or to GA to personally get into the juicy primary stuff, such research being a great pleasure to me. His son, Augustus Evans Wood, and his step-daughter, Jane Melmoth Pinckard, (raised as brother and sister) married and had John Henry; Elizabeth "Lizzie" A.; James Pinckard "Pink" and later "Major;" William A(shley) who was killed in the Battle of Franklin, 1864; McQuinn "Coose" A(ugustus); Benajah/Benejah W(ilkes); Edwin Hervey; Susan "Ida" M.; and Francis "Frank" (Staughton/Staunton) "Peleg". It is documented that John H., James P. and William A. served in the Civil War. However, I have a letter from John H. from the field outside Atlanta, 1864, in which he mentions having seen several "home" people including "Pink," "Coose," and "Bid." Their father, Augustus Evans (d. 1865), joined the home guards toward the end of the War and I believe the reference to Coose clearly indicates McQuinn Augustus also served. He was 16 years old in 1864, well of an age to have joined his brothers in service. I have not identified "Bid," but I believe he may have been William Ashley. Although it could as well have been Benajah Wilkes, 14 in 1864. I am, of course, assuming that his mention of these three nicknames, two known to be his brothers, indicates the third is as well. In 1861, John Henry was 20 and James Pinckard was 16, it is known that they both enlisted immediately upon the call for troops in AL and, I understand, that the Rough and Ready Pioneers of Pike County, a volunteer corps formed prior to the official call for troops, had its base at the old Wood Homestead. I have evidence that John, Lizzie, Major, Benajah, Ida, and Frank married and all I believe had issue. I do not have information on whether Coose or Edwin Hervey married, I do not believe that they did. Should our lines connect, I will be happy to share the information I have and compare notes (I am especially interested in photos). However, I am stretched to the breaking point with a number of responsibilities and cannot, absolutely cannot get into family research at this time -- I feel very guilty writing this now, I should be making "passports" for 35 of our midweek church kids!! Suzanne, My Ferguson Wood born 1810 came from Chester District in S.C. through Georgia to Pike County. His wife, Elizabeth, was on the 1860 census, as a widow, with her children, Jane, James, Mary, Sarah, Sam, Lucy, Margaret, Joe. Samuel Green Wood was my gr-gr-grandpa...On the 1866 Pike census, Elizabeth stated she had one child who died in the War. My ancestor, Sam, served in the 61st Alabama Infantry and was wounded at The Wilderness. He was captured at Petersburg and was imprisoned at Point Lookout, Maryland. He later moved to Coffee County and died in Geneva County in 1914..I don't know how our Pike County Woods are connected yet....Willie in California > [Original Message] > From: Suzanne Pickens <pickenss@bellsouth.net> > To: <alpike@rootsweb.com> > Date: 10/1/06 10:58:50 AM > Subject: Re: [ALPIKE] Pike County Historical Society > > " My Wood > family came from Pike County and I would truly love to see what you have on > the Wood family" > > Dear Willie from CA, > > Who are your Wood people -- the farthest back I have is Rev. Folks, I'm an inveterate volunteer myself and know how hard it is to get good volunteers (they work for love not money, you know) and I don't want to seem to be "piling on" here. But, we need someone to keep the membership informed in order to keep the society viable.. It has been too good a society to allow it to lose it's members. I'm sure there is someone who will straighten us out on what's happening. I APPRECIATE the work of all those who have given their time and efforts for the society and hope they can get things straightened out. If someone contacts them please tell them we thank them for their efforts and don't recriminate..They are all good folks...Willie in California > [Original Message] > From: Mary Hopper <mhopper1@sc.rr.com> > To: <alpike@rootsweb.com> > Date: 10/1/06 8:57:28 AM > Subject: Re: [ALPIKE] Pike County Historical Society > > Been there, done that! > > > ----- Original Message ----- > From: "Doug & Joyce Severt" <dsevert@cox.net> > To: <alpike@rootsweb.com> > Sent: Sunday, October 01, 2006 8:54 AM > Subject: Re: [ALPIKE] Pike County Historical Society > > > > Perhaps this information will help in reaching someone: > > Joyce > > > > Karen C. I must say I, too, requested information on membership in the historical society, looking forward to receiving bulletins, journals, and news of books available. I believe I did join one year -- the year the Heritage Book was being done, I think as I have one of those. I also offered numerous times and to numerous people Maj. John Henry Wood's diary and associated papers to be published in serial fashion in their publications -- no interest, no replies, no publications. I will say the Heritage Book was a huge and successful undertaking, I regret I did not get in gear and contribute.
It takes a lot of dedicated people to keep a society of any kind running smoothly. The minute something goes haywire and the operation hits the bump, it takes a while to get back on the road. It is important to communicate the health of the organization so that the members are aware that there is a problem. Hopefully, the local members will rally and step up to the plate. I speak from experience.
I am a member of the Pike County Historical & Genealogical Society as are some of you. My understanding is that those responsible for bulletins are aware that they are behind, and that they have written, typed, and edited a bulletin. The last I heard it next needed to be printed and distributed. Although my "plate" is rather full, I have offered to help prepare the bulletins for mailing when they are ready. If others in the area are available, I hope that others will volunteer also. ----- Original Message ----- Outgoing mail is Virus Scanned byNorman Data Defense. Suzanne, I, too, have heard nothing from the society though I pay my membership three years at a time and for the last two years I've had nothing from them. I have tried to get a reply, but nothing but silence. My Wood family came from Pike County and I would truly love to see what you have on the Wood family....Monday I am going to try to call the Troy library and see if I can make a connection to someone in the society. I really enjoyed it when things were working properly. I do not know anything about what they are doing anymore. I have not been a member for a few years but you should have an address on the bulletins to write and inquire. Susie, I have written e-mails and regular mail - no response has been forthcoming from either medium. I think the best thing for me to do is not renew my membership with them.
