Surnames: Splawn, Rushing, Hammonds, Crowder, Burnham Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/VS.2ADE/790 Message Board Post: Looking for information on Great Grandmother Martha Hammonds. B. 1858/1859 in Alabama . In the 1860 census, I've found a James and Mary Hammonds with Children; John, James, Francis, and Martha in Southern Division Pickens County. I have undocumented references to James and Mary's death in close proximity in approximately 1869 with the children distributed to friends and relatives. I have been unable to locate any of the Children in the 1870 or 1880 census. From 1900 Census, Martha was married in ~1888 to James Perry Rushing (b 1860 Fayette Cty AL) and moved to Indian Territory ~1892. Martha dies in 1902. Any information on the James and Mary Hammonds or the distribution of Children greatly appreciated.
Hi, These are in the book "Cemeteries Pickens County Alabama 1983" by the Pickens County Genealogical Society: Fellowship Church Cemetery James Hammond 5/22/1822-9/9/1869 Mary E. Thompson Hammond wife of James Hammond 1836-4/10/1869 Unity Grove Upper Cemetery John W. Hammond 1/11/1853-6/13/1929 Cornelia J. Hammond wife of John W. 12/23/1855-9/6/1926 All other Hammonds listed were born much later. No Francis or surname Rushing. A James Hammonds is also listed as a member of the Pickensville Blues in 1861. I have a partial older typed manuscript of cemeteries that I purchased at a store. Oddly, this manuscripts lists a Joe Hammond in Friendship Cemetery with dates almost identical to those for James above. Here is the info: Joe Hammond May 22, 1822-Sept 9, 1867 Maybe someone on the list could explain the James/Joe listings and the similarity in the names of the cemeteries. Hope this helps.
