It's not often that I see the WILSON and GUNTER names posted on ALPICKEN-L, so welcome your information. I'm not a direct descendant of the GUNTERs in Pickens Co., AL, but rather of a "brother line." My ancestor, AUGUSTA - AUGUSTUS-AUGUSTINE-GUS, etc. (1) GUNTER was brother of CLAIBORNE (1) GUNTER, FATHER OF JAMES GUNTER, b. 1794, d. 1874 m1 FANNIE MARY TITTLE of Chattanooga, TN and m2 MARTHA WILSON, 1837. JAMES GUNTER moved from Warren-Cannon Co., TN to Pickens Co., AL c1830-32. Warren Co., TN was the GUNTER home for this line from sometime prior to 1812 (Tax List), after the line had moved from NC to TN. The Tittle marriage was made when James (aged 18) & Mary (aged 16; b. 1796, d. 1834, Reform, Pickens Co., AL) were in school in Chattanooga. Among James & Mary's children: POLLY GUNTER; CLAIBORNE THOMAS GUNTER (b. 1818 Cannon Co., TN m. MARGARET ELIZABETH PRUDE in 1845, MARGARET ELIZ. daughter of JONATHAN & ELIZABETH (WILLIAMS) PRUDE. This group kept close ties with Lowndes County, MS); PETER TITTLE GUNTER (M.D.) b. 1820; MARTHA GUNTER m. WALTER STORY; WILLIAM WILSON GUNTER; SAMUEL MARION GUNTER & ROBERT G. GUNTER. AND JAMES'S CH. BY M2 MARTHA PATRICIA (nee CLEMENS) WILSON, A WIDOW: LOUISA GUNTER b. 1838; and FELIX AUGUSTUS GUNTER, b. 1840 [KG: in one of Felix's letters in the 1920-s he stated he was named for Augusta or Augustus [1] Gunter] who m1 FRANCES PRUDE, m2 ELLEN RICHARDSON. Have been most surprised to discover in last six months or so, that my old college roommate is a descendant of one of the GUNTER-PRUDE connections here in Pickens Co., AL, but we are still working on the line for precise link.
