Listers, I understand the old Pickens Co Courthouse burned down in 1875. Does anyone know when in 1875 it burned? Thank you for your help. Teresa tbransby@centurytel.net
Teresa, The Courthouse was burned on Thursday Morning, November 16, 1876. Allegedly the fire was set by a Henry Wells who, with another black man were attempting a burglarize the Courthouse. Wells was arrested in February, 1878 and placed on the third floor of the new Courthouse for his safety from possible "Mob Action". Wells face image is reported to be the now famous, "Face In The Window" at Carrollton Courthouse. The Courthouse was earlier burned during the Civil War on April 6, 1865 by Union Captain William A. Sutherland and his troops. I hope this information will be useful to you.
