    1. [ALPICKEN] Gale Johnson (1805- after 1870)
    2. I am new to this list and would like any help anyone can offer on the above Gale (Gail) Johnson. He was a male, by the way and should be spelled Gale. In 1850-70 he was in Pickens Co., AL . 1850 Census Gail (sic) Johnson 43 SC Farmer Rebecca 40 SC Samuel 20 Student GA Elizabeth 17 GA John 10 AL Abaner 8 AL Matilda R. 1 AL Daughter Mary age 12 shows up on the 1860 census, but I suspect this is Matilta since there was no Mary age 2 on the 1850 census. His son Gale, Jr., our ancestor, was born in 1851 and married first to Helen Hale and second to Nanna Hale, Helen's younger sister. They lived in Sumter Co., AL. I have more on this line and if anyone is connected to this family I would love to exchange info. One question about the area - where would a 20 year old be a student in 1850 and an 18 year old in 1870? Was that too old for high school at that time, or was there a college in the area? Maybe one with some existing records?? Thanks for your help. Betty

    2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/an/VS.2ADE/743 Message Board Post: This information is from a September 18, 2002 publication re local history...regarding an obscure little family cemetery. (ForumNews, 1158 Texas Ave., Shreveport, LA 71101, 318 222-0409, FAX: 318 222-1725. Jay Covington, President/Publisher can be contacted at: jay@theforumnews.com) The full page article includes a picture of Marion McMillan and general information re the McMillan family in Shreveport, LA after the civil war. Marion McMillan and Andrew J. Pickens were sons-in-law of Charles Graves and his wife, Louisa Jane Walton Graves. BURIALS AT THE McMILLAN CEMETERY - Shreveport, LA Although most graves at the McMillan Cemetery are unmarked -- largely owing to vandalism and neglect over many years -- the names and dates formerly on the gravestones were, fortunately, recorded. Today, a large granite monument lists all the know burials there. Remaining tombstones stand nearby. Charles Graves, 1796 - 1849 Andrew J. Pickens, 1817 - 1873 John Sherwood Auld, 1846 - 1849 Laura Pickens Petteway, 1853 - 1934 Marion McMillan, 1832 - 1914 Volumbria Aurelia McMillan, 1856 - 1914 Andrew Jackson McMillan, 1862 - 1915 Archibald Blue McMillan, 1866 - 1937 Carrie Lee McMillan Holmes, 1861 - 1931 Louisa Jane Walton Graves, 18-3 - 1873 Laura Almerea Graves Pickens, 1831 - 1876 Mulberry B. Petteway, 1824 - 1853 Charles Bruce Petteway, 1852 - 1853 Georgiana Adella Graves McMillan, 1833 - 1907 Lula Belle McMillan, 1864 - 1892 Adella Octavia McMillan, 1859 - 1907 Thomas Wendell Holmes, 1857 - 1922 Adella Davis Hester, 1850 - 1851 The Petteway family home still stands at 4203 St. Vincent Avenue, Shreveport, LA and is a landmark of the Cedar Grove/Caddo Heights area. The business and personal papers of Archibald Blue McMillan, Marion and Georgiana McMillan's son, are today housed in the archives of LSU-Shreveport. My research does NOT include these surnames...just passing the information along since this is a cemetery not likely to be found in traditional listings.

I'd love to get a copy of your pictures of the tombstones. Andrew Jackson Story was the furthest back I had gotten. He was my great great grandfather. My grandfather was their son, Benjamin Ferdinand Story b. 22 Apr 1864 at Carrollton, Alabama and died in Memphis around 1939 I looked at the census data from 1860 for Pickens County Alabama. It lists Essey Story 41 years old, mother of Andrew J. 7 years old, Gerogian M. a girl age 9, Malinda A. age 4 and B. F. a boy age 16. That must have been a different group of Storys as the date of Andrews birth, 1840, would have made him 20 years old and not 7.Thanks again! Jeff

Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/VS.2ADE/737.1 Message Board Post: Hi Jeff, It's really coincidental that you ask about Andrew Jack Story, because I just searched out and photographed his tombstone last Saturday a week ago! He and his wife are buried in Friendship Cemetery in Columbus, Lowndes Co., MS, though she does not have a tombstone. I'm quite sure that these are the same ones you're looking for information on, though I have dates & spellings a little bit different from yours: Andrew Jack Story, b. 18 JUL 1840, d. 23 MAR 1903 married on 7 JAN 1867 in Pickens Co.,AL to Kitturah Wilson b. about 1847, d. 23 FEB 1913. A.J. Story served in Co.H, 11th Ala. in the CSA. There are also tombstones in the same plot for their daughter Mayes Story Elliott Scott b. 28 OCT 1867, d. 24 APR 1908 and her son Edward Mayes Scott b. 23 APR 1908, d. 6 FEB 1909. You can see from the dates that she died the day after giving birth to her son. Andrew Jack Story was a younger brother to my great great grandmother Sarah Evelyn Story, wife of Major Andrew D. Howard. Sarah Evelyn (15 FEB 1830 - 30 JAN 1882) was the oldest child of Allen Wiley Story (d. 6 JUL 1846) and Epsy S. Carter (d. 15 JUL 1891), both of who were born in Georgia according to my information. Bobby
