Everyone, I've added some transcriptions for the Alabama Beacon newspaper - completing year 1843 and beginning 1844. They are at: http://home.bellsouth.net/personalpages/PWP-catherinewcooper When you go to my page, click on Alabama Beacon on the menu on the right side of the web page. There are four different links on this menu for the Beacon transcriptions. I will be transcribing more in the future and will let you know when I post them. Catherine

Mr. Davis lived near Canaan church which was organized in April of 1818. Job died in Pickens County, Alabama in 1835. "On the 25th day of May 1822, a number of members from Canaan Church was dismissed and soon afterwards were organized into a church called Bethel (Rock Creek) situated about 10 miles from the mother church. "Job, an African slave and a licensed preacher, was received into this church in 1823; he was an acceptable preacher, a man of deep thought, sound judgment, and well skilled in the Scriptures of divine truth. "He was dismissed from this chruch with twenty other members in 1827 to form Roupe's Valley Church. Later he reunited with Bethel Church for convenience; and finally his master, Mr. Davis moved to Pickens County in the Western part of the state, and Job became a member of the church called Pilgrim's Rest, under the care of Rev. Henry Petty; here Job died in the bosom of his church on the 17th day of November 1835. "Job was purchased as a slave by Mr. Davis and was owned by him as long as he lived; and he faithfully served his master until death. He professed religion in 1812; soon he learned to read and taught a Sabbath School for two summers in Abbeville District, S.C. under the care of James Thompson, Esq.; he was licensed to preach in 1818 and came to Alabama in 1822; he resided with his master in Tuscaloosa county until 1833, when Mr. Davis removed to Pickens County, where Job died. "His wife followed him in less than a year and a hlaf aterwards. The last words she ever uttered were, 'O tell me no more of this world's vain store, etc.' (*). As soon as she had finished the verse, she closed her eyes on the world. "Few better preachers were to be found in Alabama in those days than Job. He lived the Christian and died the saint. I don't know anything about Solomon, but James and Daniel moved to SC for a short time and then moved to Pickens Co, AL about 1810. Daniel was the Post Master at Jena, AL. He and Drusilla had 13 children, one of which was named Solomon. It is here that Rachel shows up in the land records. I have no proof, but I believe that Rachel may have been the wife of Solomon. I also believe that Solomon was probably deceased by this time. Harriet was the same age as some of James and Daniel's children and if the above is true, then Harriet would be a 1st cousin to James and Daniel's children. I have lots of info on James and Daniel's descendants. I just wish I could find as much about Solomon. If anyone has this info, please respond. Henry Teer
I haven't been able to find any Davis's of these names in books I have except this entry for a George Davis from the Huntsville Democrat: September 30, 1846 "Died at his residence in this county on the 13th, George Davis in his 83rd year. Had long been afflicted with a painful disease--rheumatism. Member of the church for 50 years. For last 35 years a consistent member of the Cumberland Presbyterian Church. The Huntsville Democrat, Banner of Peace at Lebanon, Tenn. and the prints at Greenville and Jonesboro, Tenn. copy. (From Athens Chronicle--Limestone Co.) Looks like he lived in Limestone. Age is right for the George in Pickens 1830, but this is a common name. Could not locate any Billions. Similar names in Pickens were Billups, Billingsley, and Binion. Perhaps the census taker misspelled the name? Hi, These are in the book "Cemeteries Pickens County Alabama 1983" by the Pickens County Genealogical Society: Fellowship Church Cemetery James Hammond 5/22/1822-9/9/1869 Mary E. Thompson Hammond wife of James Hammond 1836-4/10/1869 Unity Grove Upper Cemetery John W. Hammond 1/11/1853-6/13/1929 Cornelia J. Hammond wife of John W. 12/23/1855-9/6/1926 All other Hammonds listed were born much later. No Francis or surname Rushing. A James Hammonds is also listed as a member of the Pickensville Blues in 1861. I have a partial older typed manuscript of cemeteries that I purchased at a store. Oddly, this manuscripts lists a Joe Hammond in Friendship Cemetery with dates almost identical to those for James above. Here is the info: Joe Hammond May 22, 1822-Sept 9, 1867 Maybe someone on the list could explain the James/Joe listings and the similarity in the names of the cemeteries. Hope this helps.
