    1. ([ALPICKEN])Memorial Day
    2. Richard Berkheiser
    3. Hi everyone! Sorry to start another thread of messages so close to a Surname Shout Out but with the lists being down the first part of the year it threw my scheduling off. Hope you don't mind... With this being the Memorial Day Weekend, I thought it would it be interesting to post one ancestor we have in our family trees who served in one of the many wars and battles we fought in US History. Obviously it has to be an ancestor from this county. :) Give a brief biography of that person including the unit and war he or she was in, a POW, injuries, plus the usual genealogical stuff. Thanks in advance and have a safe weekend! Rick B Admin

He was a Confederate soldier in the Third Alabama Reserves; that record indicates that he was 47 in 1864. On the 1866 Alabama Census he was living in Tuscaloosa. In 1867 he was on the Alabama voter registration rolls in Tuscaloosa. On the 1880 U S. Census he is listed as James Walker in Memphis, Pickens county. I have been told he was often called Mr. Walker. He was married to Elizabeth Sophronia Taylor in Greene county, Alabama, in 1858. Their son, Thomas Meriwether Heritage, is my grandfather. He and his family lived in Memphis, Pickens county, for some time before moving to Mississippi. My father, Thomas Albert Heritage, and his brothers and sisters were all born in Pickens county. I need to find out in which state(s) James Walker Heritage and his son Thomas Meriwether Heritage were born. I cannot get the Heritages out of Alabama. I don't know if they were related to the Henry Freshwater Heritage in Pickens county. Any help would be greatly appreciated as I live in Texas and am currently unable to travel to Alabama to do research. Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. Author: CathyThi Surnames: Russell Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.northam.usa.states.alabama.counties.pickens/2015.2/mb.ashx Message Board Post: Martha, James and Margaret are my ancestors. I don't know who mixed up and gave Margaret the maiden name Jenkins, but I have never seen any proof of it. The death date given for her belongs to a Jenkins who was married to a Thomas Russell and they lived in a different part of Alabama and do not appear to be related to our Russell's. James and Margaret were in Giles Co. TN before moving to Pickens AL. I think they were in Fairfield SC before that as Savilla gives Fairfield as her birthplace. DNA connects this James Russell to James and Isabella Russell who lived in Birmingham, Chester, PA. It is now Chadds Ford, Delaware Co. PA. He was born abt 1710 and showed up on tax records about 1760. He was a weaver. He had a will and lists children as John, Samuel, Martha, James, and Ephraim. There are many grandchildren with the given name James and I have not been able to identify ours, if he is in this line directly. It is possible that this James married to Isabella is an uncle and not a grandfather. I have been working on this line for a long time and it is difficult as they did not leave a good paper trail.
