Hey All I'm new to list but been doing some research off and on. I'm looking for information concerning Joshua and Aaron Griffin. They were two mulatto boys that were listed in Archibald H. (Baldy) household all of their lives until grown. They were free inhabitants. In later years, Sarah Ann ( Archibald's oldest white daughter ) was seen in the home of both boys on the census listed as mother. I have heard tales that these boys were: 1. Children of a slave named Dawes/Doss Dixon/Dickson or Dixon Doss. The only thing to uphold this rumor is that Joshua named a son John Doss/Dawes. I'm unsure of the correct spelling. 2. Children were black dutch 3. Children were Cherokee My father has recently told me that they lived out in "The Griffin Settlement". I had heard years ago about the Griffin Settlement and that it was where all the half and half Griffins lived but had not associated it with Joshua and Aaron. As it turns out, according to my father, that is who started the settlement because they were pretty much outcast. The settlement had its on school called The Elliot Creek School and the Griffin's paid teachers. One by the name of Professor Little and the last teacher being a female but he can not remember her name. The children were not allowed in public school. And as the family grew, married and had more children..they all continued to go to school there up until somewhere in my fathers generation. Joshua would have been born around 1839 and Aaron around 1847 according to the census they were both born in Alabama. Is there anyone on the list that knows anything about this at all? Is there anyone that can make a trip to the courthouse for me and look up a possible bastard bond/bastardly bonds for Sarah Ann Griffin and these boys? Marriage license of the boys that might show parents names? I'm not sure when they died so I don't know if birth certificates would have been issued. Desperately seeking help. I live in Ga. and I just don't think the information I need is going to be found online anywhere. If it is, I haven't found it in the last 6 years. I think they may have been in Hale county prior to Perry. Seems the change in county lines put them over in Perry. Thanks so much Sharon Griffin-Cobb
I remember my mother speaking of a community as Griffin Town. I always had the idea that it was in Hale County and maybe nearer Moundville. This could possibly be 2 different families/communities. I have no one left that I could ask. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Sharon Cobb" <sharonc@planters.net> To: <ALPERRY-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Friday, July 02, 2004 8:14 AM Subject: [ALPERRY] The Griffin Settlement/Elliot Creek School/Mulatto Griffins > Hey All > > I'm new to list but been doing some research off and on. Hey Sybil No..its the same family They started in Hale, lines moved and it became Perry and then when the "mulatto" race designation began, the mulatto line moved back out into Hale, near Moundville. Do you remember anything that your mom said about this place? Thanks sharon
