    1. [ALPERRY] Rev. Junius E. Newman, b abt 1820
    2. Cathy Garrett
    3. Junius was born abt 1820 in either Maryland or Virginia (conflicting census reports). During the 1830's and 40's he performed marriages in Greene Co, AL. Junius Newman married Mary A Phillips on 27 Feb 1847 in Perry Co, AL. (There was no Hale County seperating Greene and Perry until 1860's.) On the 1850 census, he and Mary are found in the household of Bryant Gulley, with no children, in Greene Co, AL, with both he and Mary claiming Maryland as their place of birth. In 1855 he is appointed to the Livingston charge in the Gainesville District of the Methodist Episcopal Church of the Alabama Conference. In 1856, he is appointed to the Enterprise charge, Clarke Co, MS, in the Macon District. (Several of the E. Miss. counties belong to the Alabama Conference.) In 1857, he buys land in Lauderdale Co, MS from John Shackelford and his wife Phebe H. The land is in the area between Sageville and Lauderdale Station. Several other land deeds indicate he purchased large landholdings in the same area about the same time. By 1859, he is riding the Meridian circuit, which includes the Methodist church at Marion. In 1860 his family is listed on the Lauderdale Co, MS census, Dwelling 308, Family 294 J.E. Newman, 40, Minister M.E., 9000/8000, VA Mary 35 AL Virginia 12 AL Mary 10 AL William 6 AL Ann 4 AL Thomas F. 2 MS L. Shackelford, 28, physician, AL On Aug 8, 1863, his son Thomas Foster Newman, b. June 27, 1858, dies and is buried at Sageville. In 1864, records show he is serving as the Presiding Elder of the Macon District. In 1865, he is assigned to the Oktibbee Circuit. On July 23, 1867, his daughter Virginia Newman marries Dr. Lee Shackelford in Lauderdale Co, MS. This is the year he sells all his property in Lauderdale Co., gives his wife power of attorney, with the explanation that he is going to Brazil as a missionary. What happened to him after that? Was he one of the Southerners who refused to be governed by the Yankee reconstructionists, disappearing into Brazil, never to be heard from again? Or was his missionary tour a short one and he returned to the states? Where? Who were the parents and siblings of Junius and Mary? Their siblings? This message should supercede previous messages in which I named Rev. J. E. Newman as James. There was a transcription error in one of the indexes. Sorry.
