Mattie, Mattie Hughey was your mother, right? So her mother was Ellen unknown. Hughey would have been her married name. In the 1880 census in George Hughey's household, Mary Brazier age 16 is listed as his sister in law. Hence, Ellen's maiden name should be Brazier too. This Mary Brazier married W T Dunkin on 9 August 1883 in Perry County, AL. There in the same census in Dallas County is a boarding house that is managed by an elderly couple Mary and James Brazier. According to Rootsweb researcher Linda Dewitt Hughey, Ellen and Mary Brazier were the daughters of Chief Black Cloud. It has been stated that Chief Black Cloud was Cherokee. There mother was Rebecca Brazier...maybe that is why the Brazier family said they were not Ellen's family. Why cant I find the name of Ellen's mother and Ellen's grandmother? My mother Mattie Hughey) tried to find records of this as long as she lived. Mom said grandpa George told her after Ellen died that he wrote to her family to inform them of her death and received an awful letter back, said it went to the wrong family, said he guessed it best to let it go. Mom was 18 years old and I know she told the truth about this as she searched the rest of her life. It seems I am doing likewise!
